Silken_Glove's Full Review: Cosco Basic High Chair
I have to say that this high chair is one of the best pieces of baby equipment we have ever gotten! I got it 19 years ago and the design is still the same! Obviously, Cosco knows they have a winner here.
At the time I got this high chair, we already had one high chair but needed a second one. The added benefit was that the diapers we were using at the time had points that could be saved and I saved enough with two in diapers to get this chair! I didn't realize what a bargain I was getting when I sent away for this chair!
I was impressed with the chair from the start. It is lightweight but sturdy. It folds easily and stores in much less space than our original chair which cost my mother-in-law plenty! (This chair has even gone camping with us!) It's a dream to clean too. I have even put the tray into the dishwasher many times -- especially after it got stained with spaghetti and it is as white today as when it came in the mail.
I did find that the original vinyl had split and didn't look as nice after several years of use. In fact, it was a little stained and wasn't as white as when it was new but it wasn't any more worn looking than the more expensive chair. The only thing this chair had that the more expensive chair didn't was a small split in the vinyl. So when our third child was born six years after number two, I re-covered the chair with vinyl that I purchased at a local fabric store. The chair was very easy to take apart and installing the new cover was not difficult at all. (No sewing ability needed!) The results were so great that I have had many compliments on the chair. (The new vinyl is a softer vinyl than the original and had no cracks when brought out of storage.)
As I said this chair is 19 years old. That more expensive chair is long gone -- it just didn't hold up as well and this chair stored so nicely that it was the easy winner when it came time to choose! This chair was brought out of storage 3 years ago for my grandson. It was easy to clean up and still looks good. The safety straps did not look very good: the stains, etc. of previous users had turned it an awful grey color. I didn't know if Cosco has replacements or not but I bleached the straps and they came out pretty well. The foot tray was replaced as it had a crack in it that was a little rough and probably wasn't very safe. The replacement installed easily -- no change in the shape/design over the years. (The old one was a harder plastic but the new one is a softer plastic like the tray.)
This chair has proved itself to be an excellent value. Who would have believed that this chair would still be giving service so long after it's purchase? This chair was around $12-$15 at the time I got it but today's price of $25 is not a bad deal, especially when you consider how much life this chair has!
