| servin's Full Review: Cosi Sandwich Bar |
The very first thing you notice when you walk into any Cosi Sandwich Bar is the smell of baking brick oven bread. That's because the foundation of every Cosi sandwich is a piece of freshly baked Cosi flatbread. I work in the downtown Manhattan's financial district and frequent the Cosi Sandwich Shop near my office quite often. Here's what I like:
Location, Location, Location
In Manhattan, at least, there are many Cosi sandwich shops. I can think of at least two within walking distance of my office in lower Manhattan. I know there are several more in Midtown. Bottom line, if you work in NYC, you will be able to find a Cost.
The Food
Bread and Water...
...is really enough for me at a Cosi Sandwich Shop. Ok, ok, I exaggerate. Let's put it this way - don't ever, ever walk into a Cosi if you are on the Atkins or any other low-no carb diets. You will either 1) blow your diet within 3 seconds of entering the shop or 2) begin to sob hysterically that you cannot partake of the awesome bread.
The bread at Cosi is freshly baked in the front of the store throughout the day. It is a flat, brick oven baked bread, which means that you don't have to spend 20 minutes during lunch picking out the gooey guts of your too thick bread. While waiting on line, small pieces of the freshly baked bread are available for you to snack on. So good that you almost hope there is a line (which, invariably, there is).
There is only one choice for bread, which is fine, since (may I say it again) it is sooooo gooooood.
The Fillings
You have a choice of a wide variety of fillings at any Cosi. These are not your typical deli type fillings, but far more exotic options such as Tandoori Chicken, Pesto and Sundried tomatoes, caramalized onions, and many more. Don't waste a trip to a Cosi for a bologna and cheese sandwich.
I often order some of the speciality sandwiches recommended by the store - my all time favorite is the Buffalo Chicken Wing Sandwich which consists of pieces of chicken breast in a buffalo wing sauce, blue cheese and celery dressing. So good. Another one of my favorites is roast beef, horseradish and caramelized onions.
The Size
For me, one Cosi sandwich is more than enough food for lunch. However, if you are accustomed to oversized hero's with fillings so high that you can't bite the sandwich, then Cosi may disappoint you. While there sandwiches are certainly sizable, they are not HUGE. This is clearly a case of quality vs quantity. These sandwiches are great.
Other Food
Cosi does sell other foods, like prepared salads, which to be honest, I have never eaten. (Although if they served them with the bread, I'm sure it would be a good meal).
Price
An average lunch at Cosi (sandwich and a drink) generally runs between $8 and $10. To me, that is not a bad price, especially since that bologna and cheese sandwich I mentioned above from any deli will likely run about the same. For a Manhattan lunch, this is pretty standard and well worth the price.
Atmosphere
Most Cosi's do offer some seating, both indoors and outdoors. The inside seating tends to be quite noisy, and it is often difficult to get a table, especially during peak lunch hours. You are probably better of getting your sandwich to go.
