laurashrti's Full Review: Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Shine Volumizing Mascara...
I'm a sucker for mascaras, so I always get excited when I run out and can try something new. I have used a few brands/types more than once, but I never use the exact same mascara twice in a row. The last time I ran out of mascara I was excited to try something new and when I scoured the Cover Girl section at the drugstore I settled on LashBlast Luxe in the Black Cabernet 845 color. The mascara had enticing words like luxe, shimmer, and volume, which needless to say, got me pretty wound up. Yes, I was wound up about mascara.
About the Product
the Black Cabernet colored mascara claims to be tinted with "luxe shimmers." The big brush should help define and add volume. The mascara claims to be easily removable (with soap and water), and hypoallergenic and suitable for those who wear contact lenses.
As is almost always the case I opened this mascara in the car and used it on top of the mascara I already had on because I can never resist a brand spanking new tube of mascara. The wand was packaged separately from the tube, so I had to insert it myself and give it a few twirls to get some color onto the bristles. The bristles of the applicator wand are an orangish color (very odd), and were rubbery and tapered at the end. I swiped the mascara onto my lashes and checked my rearview mirror for that shimmery sparkle the package promised... but didn't see it. All hope was not lost, however, as I reminded myself that I had another mascara on below. I figured I'd wait and give it another try when I applied fresh makeup the next morning.
The next time I used the mascara I had a blank slate to work with. I cracked open the tube and swirled the mascara on the wand slightly, then swiped my lashes with a few coats. The package displayed a sort of dark, maroon(ish) color that I thought would compliment my usually-grey/green/blue eyes well. The way the color was listed- Black Cabernet I expected a black base color with a sort of maroon color tint to it. The product packaging made it sound like there would be a shimmery effect with the maroon color. The mascara I put on was really just a brown-black colored mascara... and that was it. My lashes are fairly voluminous, so I don't notice a big difference with volumizing mascaras, but with this one I noticed nothing. I applied a few more coats and paid close attention to get the tiny lashes at the corners of my eyes as well as the very tips of my lashes, but I still didn't notice anything spectacular in the volume area. The color was disappointing; I'm not really a brown-black fan, I prefer either a specialty color or tint (like, say, a Black Cabernet type tint with shimmer effects) or a very black black. I saw no shimmery effect, and no maroon, cabernet, whatever color whatsoever. What a disappointment. As the day wore on the mascara flaked and what little brownish black tint I had on my lashes was gone within a simple 8-hour workday. Again: what a disappointment.
There are a few positives about the mascara, and some of the product's claims are actually true. The brush was very easy to use, and I like the rubbery material; it keeps the mascara from clumping on the brush, and the separated bristles make for easy application. The tapered end makes it easy (even for shaky-hands me) to reach the tiny lashes in the corners of my eyes and to apply mascara on the bottom lashes and tips of my lashes. Also, the orange color of the wand makes it easy to see how much product is on the wand, and makes it easy to see if say a piece of fuzz or a stray lash is stuck to the brush. Also, the mascara comes of incredibly easy with simple soap and water, and if my eyes water, my face sweats, or I all-out cry (come on, I'm 8 months pregnant, it happens) the stuff doesn't run...
...it just flakes off instead. And washing the product off my eyes is easy perhaps because most of it has flaked off by the end of the day anyway. I can pinch my lashes between my fingers and gently rub and pretty much all the mascara comes off easily... to heck with soap and water. I'm disappointed in the color; it wasn't as suave as the name Black Cabernet sounds, and the "black" part of the name was completely misleading. They should have just called this color the typical brown-black. I saw absolutely no shine or shimmer added to my lashes the way the product promised, and I saw no volume whatsoever; I've used mascaras that don't even boast volumizing features give me fuller lashes than this.
I've heard many other people complain that Cover Girl's Lash Blast Luxe isn't nearly as good as the plain old Lash Blast, but as I haven't tried the Luxe-less (well, the admittedly Luxe-less) variety I can't vouch for that myself. What I can say is that for less than $8.00 this is just an okay mascara; it's your everday, no frills, may fade or flake through the day mascara... and that's all it is.
I'll continue to use this mascara until it's pretty much gone because I like the applicator and because I'm too cheap to buy another tube. I'm just very disappointed.
