moonsista's Full Review: Cover Girl Lash Blast Luxe Mascara Black Platinum
I absolutely LOVE the original Cover Girl LashBlast Mascara (the one in the orange tube). I have repurchased that mascara more than I have repurchased any other mascara in my 20+ years of wearing makeup. I then saw a new version of LashBlast in a magazine several months ago - LashBlast Mascara tinted with colored shimmer. I couldn't wait to give it a try, and ended up finding it within a week at my local Wal-Mart.
Product Details:
Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in the Black Platinum shade is like regular LashBlast Mascara, but it has lots of silvery shimmery particles in it. It isn't as black as regular LashBlast, but that's because it has so many shimmery, silvery particles that make it look more like a dark gray color.
Cover Girl says this about this product: Get a blast of volumized lashes with a hint of luxurious shimmer with the biggest brush EVER from Cover Girl! LashBlast's volume-boosting formula and BIG BRUSH give you big, bold, luxurious lashes.
LashBlast Luxe Mascara comes in three other shades as well - Black Cabernet (wine shimmer), Black Emerald (green shimmer) and Black Royale (blue shimmer).
I was pretty sure I knew what to expect from Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Mascara. I already had a similar mascara but was eager to see what the LashBlast version would be like. It turns out that the two products are very similar. And, in a nutshell, the Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe is just regular Cover Girl LashBlast Mascara but with a lot of silvery, shimmer particles mixed in.
LashBlast Luxe looks like the regular LashBlast Mascara - it has the same texture. Even the packaging is the same, except that the LashBlast Luxe tube is red instead of orange.
This mascara applies easily to my eyelashes with no clumping. I love the big, over-sized brush because it really does seem to apply a nice amount of mascara to my lashes. I always have to apply two coats, but I have to do that with any mascara. The bristles on this brush are those newer, rubber type of bristles that are part of the brush itself. They aren't the older, nylon type. I think this newer, rubbery type helps mascara to apply better to the lashes.
Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in the black platinum shade really is more of a dark gray shade because the micro-tiny, silvery shimmer particles are abundant in this mascara, taking away from the dark black color of the mascara. For me, the shimmer payoff really isn't there. When I apply this mascara, even if I apply multiple coats, I can't really see the shimmer. My lashes just look like they have regular mascara applied to them, and like I didn't choose the darkest black shade available. I think that the shimmer particles don't do much for my eyes or my lashes, and instead they detract from the mascara itself. I just don't think this makes eyes "pop" and it doesn't give the "luxurious" look that Cover Girl intended. It's possible that I chose the most subtle of all of the shades, but I doubt it.
This mascara adds quite a bit of volume and a bit of length. I am quite pleased with the amount of volume it gives my lashes, as my lashes aren't exactly thick and luxurious to begin with. My lashes need as much help as anyone's and I like the amount of volume it adds. Again, I need more than one coat - usually two, with another coat added around lunchtime just because I always feel like it can't hurt. I would say that the length that this mascara adds is a medium amount. It isn't very minimal, but it also isn't a true "lengthening" mascara that makes my lashes 20 or 30% longer.
Despite not being as black as I would like it to be, Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Mascara performs well as a mascara in general. It never flakes off. I could apply two or three coats of this mascara and it would never flake off no matter what. I don't have to worry about this mascara flaking off onto my cheeks during a long meeting at work, which is something I hate and have had to deal with when using some other mascaras. Another good thing about this mascara is that it never clumps. Just like with the original LashBlast Mascara, this never clumps no matter what. I love not having to deal with clumps! One of the concerns I had when I purchased this mascara was that the tiny shimmer particles might flake off by themselves onto my cheeks or into my eyes, but that hasn't happened at all.
I wouldn't say that this mascara wears off or runs more easily when exposed to water than the average mascara. Since it isn't waterproof, it does start to break down some when water hits it. However, it doesn't perform any worse than any other drugstore brand or high-end mascara.
Overall, Cover Girl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in theBlack Platinum shade is really not a great mascara. It performs well as a mascara, but it isn't dark enough and the shimmer particles do absolutely nothing for my eyes' appearance or for my lashes. I will not purchase this product again, because it doesn't live up to its claims. My recommendation is to try one of the other shades or just skip this Luxe formula and use the original LashBlast instead.
