Lipslicks- for me a perfect lip balm/gloss/stick!!
Written: Oct 16 '04
Pros:Cheap, non sticky, moisturizing, fairly longwearing (for me)
Cons:tastes like lipstick, can't find all shades at stores, limited color selection (13)
The Bottom Line: Fantastic balm-like lip stick/gloss products. Gives soft gloss finish and sheer color. Great gloss for gloss "beginners" converting from lipsticks to lighter gloss.
As I have said before, I truly love the look of lipgloss. However, I pretty much hate lipgloss itself. Most are way to shiny (as in patent-leather) some are way to shimmery, many are to thick, sticky, messy, not sheer enough, to sheer etc. etc. The ones I have found that I really do like disappear in about a half an hour so for me its pretty pointless.
I have been a long time user of Covergirl Outlast Lip Color to try to get the best of both worlds, a longwearing lip color with a soft, shiny gloss finish. Lately my lips have been horribly dry and even with my nightly dose of Carmex my lips are still dry and my beloved Outlast isn't helping matters any.
So off I went to find some form of lip color to replace my Outlast (if only temporarily).
After scanning my options, which all looked like regular lipstick, regular balm, or regular gloss, I stopped and took a closer look at Covergirl Lipslicks.
They have been around forever and have not changed much except for the manes and some of the shades. They are cheap enough - $3.48 at Target and they come blister packaged on blue and white cardboard- the Covergirl colors. It would be nicer if they were sold loose so you could get a better look at the shade.
Each Lipslick comes in a round plastic tube with a clear lid. The tube is colored to coordinate (not match!) the shade of the actual product. The actual product has a very large, flat, slanted tip- not at all like lipstick, which is slanted but contoured or rounded.
On the website Covergirl has 13 shades listed. I have, as of yet, seen any store that carries all 13. Most stores carry six or so. The ones I have seen are- Demure (pink/beige), Clear (self explanitory), Pearly girl (a shimmery silver/clear), Hipster(looks like a reddish brown), Princess (a very pink- pink), Daring (looks like red), and Bronze goddess(which looks like a dark bronze brown).
I choose Demure- a beigey/pink shade. I love pink but have a hard time finding a "good" pink shade for me. I hit the jackpot with this one. For me the shade is perfect- although it looks like a slightly darker nude pink in the tube it goes on a paler, soft, neutral pink-pink with no shimmer. It goes with everything and even though its slightly lighter than my natural lips it looks great. (I do prefer natural looking lip shades- long gone are my red /purple days)
I love the way Lipslick feel. I actually think this is more of a balm like lipstick cross than a gloss like Covergirl markets it as. The texture is more of a chapstick feeling but much lighter and the finish of this is like that of a sheer, glossy lipstick. Lipslick go on soft and smooth and light with no stickiness. This is major, I hate feeling like my lips are caked with product or stuck together.
The only complaint I have is that Lipslicks taste like lipstick- you know that nasty waxy taste. I have actually used a flavored balm on my lips first to help lessen the taste and it does help.
I apply lipslicks to either completely bare lips or over my flavored balm and I get at most an hour and a half of wear. Lipslick will make it through a cup off coffee but not a meal. I geuss thats pretty good considering its supposed to be a gloss product.
When my Lipslicks wear off my lips are not left feeling sticky or cakey they just have a slight waxy feeling to them and amazingly I still have some color, its almost like Lipslicks dry to a waxy stain. I do initially apply my Lipslicks fairly heavily- 3-4 coats so you might not get such good results with one swipe.
I hate to reapply my lipstick but with Lipslicks I don't mind. With the wide tip and can just swipe and be done without having to check a mirror. I don't need to use a lipliner with Lipslicks, the shade and soft glossy finish make my lips look "plump" and soft and pretty. After 2 days using Lipslicks my lips are no longer dry and I can stop using my Carmex at night and switch to a lighter balm.
(Note: I have only gotten such good results with Demure- I have tried Hipster but the color was not good on me and it actually felt less balmly than my Demure.)
I really do love Covergirl Lipslicks, I am totally surprised by this product. For me its perfect, but remember I am used to wearing only longwearing, dry, matte lipstick so if you are a true glossy gloss girl looking for something different you might not like this. However if your looking for a balmy, sheer, glossy lipstick product this is great.
I think I have just replaced my Outlast and may be turning into a glossy girl!
