makeupu's Full Review: Cover Girl Outlast Lipcolor
I HAD A BREAKDOWN...
No, not that kind.. a makeup breakdown..I had to see what all the hype was about with these new lipsticks - do they really outlast all the others like the commercials say?
While on a major grocery spree, I just couldn't pass up... the makeup aisle. There is not a single item that I need in that aisle- when I tell you that I have more makeup than any human should be allowed... I'm serious! Makeup is a drug to me, a quick fix, an upper and an instant high! Only other makeup junkies out there know what it's like to open a fresh tube of mascara, swirl on a new shade of blush and drown yourself in a sea of cosmetics - but that's my life and that's how I make my living... with makeup and I couldn't imagine a life without it! Sad & shallow, but true... So, as I scanned the shelves for something that I didn't have, there were the signs for OUTLAST! As a makeup artist, my work consists of constant touch-ups and anything that's going to make my job quicker and easier; I'm all for it! There were lots of colors to choose from & at $9.99 a tube- I figured this stuff is really going to work! I'm not good at remembering coupons but a lot of times you can find these on sale elsewhere but my addiction got the best of me, once again... stupid me!
I couldn't decide on which shades of Cover Girl Outlast to purchase, so I bought two. I normally wear very natural lipstick colors myself, (and don't ever buy Cover Girl), so I decided on #591, which is a very natural pink, similar to your own lip color, but this one had a gold shimmer to it that caught my attention. The other shade , which I really didn't need, is # 598, probably the most popular & natural color, again similar to your own lip color a pinky-brown. I decide to keep the lighter shade for myself and use the other for an upcoming video shoot I would be working on & make my own screen test!
So, I get out to the car, throw the groceries in the back, and dig through the bags to get my fix! I immediately rip open the box, pull down the lightedmakeup visor (every junkies best friend), and slather on my new lipstick... aahhhh.... At first it feels good but then it dries and your lips literally stick together. Every line in my 42 year old lips show and I don't even smoke! As I begin to come down from my high, reality sets in & the color looks awful on me! The gold highlights have now turned white on my lips and this shade is now reminiscent of the 1960's! I decide to put it to the extreme test and apply 3 coats of the glue! This time, I smile, to get it into the cracks on my lips, but as they fall back into place; they're still there and I decide to give up! Without a lipliner, this color just blends right into my skin and I look like I'm dead! Hey, maybe I can use it on my next horror flick! But wait... what's this, another lip gloss in the box, too? Maybe this will help my dreadful situation. A sleek little blue tube is included in the box to apply over the color. It feels creamy on my parched lips and adds instant shine & is a great relief from the dryness and tackiness. But the big question is... WILL IT LAST?
The gloss did give it a little life, but I'm still not happy with the color, or the feel... they feel gritty. If I have to put up with this for 8 hours, I'll go nuts!
I put it through a few more tests, before I really give up on it. First one, my favorite, the KISS test. While my husband puts the groceries away, I grab my 5 year old son & smother him in kisses. No lipstick prints smeared all over his cute little face, surprise, surprise! Next is the DRINK test and no lipstick on the coffee mug. Thinking that I can outlast the "Outlast", I try my last ditch effort with the KLEENEX test- I grab a Kleenex and first try blotting, that doesn't work, it's still there. I try rubbing it off but the Kleenex tears and the Outlast #591 begins to crumble under all the pressure! So, It did past my tests, but I still hate the FEEL of it!
I had to put these to my own makeup test. Okay, so the other commercial is Max Factor... but basically, it's the same product, different brand! You know the commercial where the girl is sitting at a table eating ice cream with her boyfriend and she gets a drop of whipped cream on her big red glossy lips, and she sensuously tries to lick it off?! They cut to her makeup artist, a British woman, who says that after eight hours of filming her lipstick didn't come off. PLEASE...That lipstick was freshened up a hundred times to look that good!
I had a commercial shoot the other day & decided I'd try it on my actress. She was in her mid to late sixties with lots of lines around her mouth. I wanted to see if this formula would do like it said & I am happy to say that it did hold up under the lights, and did not bleed into the lines above her lips...but after about 4 hours, it started to get cakey looking. Luckily there were no major close-ups involved, and I kept applying the gloss to freshen it up, so I was okay..this time!
In conclusion, I'd never purchase these again. It's alot of upkeep - I'd rather keep applying lipstick, than deal with dry, cakey looking lips!
