| BeeCharmer's Full Review: Cover Girl Perfect Point Plus Eye Pencil |
Cover Girl’s Perfect Point Plus is definitely one of the better drugstore brand eyeliners on the market today. Not only was I pleasantly surprised by its overall performance, but its incredibly reasonable, inexpensive price is another plus in my book.
Product Hype
• Smooth, blendable color glides on effortlessly
• Self-sharpening and water-resistant
• Opthalmologist tested
The Perfect Point Plus comes simply packaged, adorned only with two clear plastic caps on both ends, one to cover the angled sponge applicator used for softening a line of product if desired and the other cap protects the liner’s product tip itself. Snug fitting and fairly durable, these effective little caps have yet to crack on me or become loose after being jostled around in my purse.
Color Selection
Cover Girl’s palette of eight colors is fairly broad for a pencil of its genre, nothing too over the top, yet it does contain a little something for the majority of consumers looking for a basic lining product none-the-less.
Warm, Neutral and Cool colors are available for differing complexions and preferences: Espresso, Chestnut, Grey Khaki, Black Onyx, Charcoal, Dusky Blue, Midnight Blue, and Plum Velvet.
The Perfect Point Plus color pencil that I use most often is Espresso, a deep brown. This eyeliner offers a very fine, definite line which applies with ease and very little pressure upon the delicate skin around the eye area. Absolutely no tugging or pulling, it just isn’t necessary with this softer textured liner. A must not only for the benefit to one's skin over time, but also due to the fact that the product tip is rather thin and too much pressure could easily cause breakage if one was to press too hard during its application.
I am also a contact wearer with fairly sensitive skin, and this eyeliner has not once caused me to experience any adverse effects throughout the duration of its use.
Overall Performance
This particular eyeliner pencil is unique in that it is specifically designed with a self-sharpener inside. No fuss, no muss, and best of all – no unnecessary product waste. Working much like a mechanical pencil, one small twist causes additional product to appear, producing a tapered, relatively thin and somewhat rounded applicator tip.
One minor caveat with this pencil’s overall design in respect to this feature is that one must be careful not to over-expose more liner product than they need when replenishing the lining tip. Once you have twisted the pencil upwards, it unfortunately will not allow you to twist it back into the pencil shaft. However, if you go slow and take a moment to get the hang of it, this can be avoided with very little trouble.
For those who use a liner product frequently, these pencils in general should last you quite awhile. I do not wear full makeup everyday, but usually the majority of days per week eyeliner is used in some capacity. Frugal makeup consumers will undoubtedly be pleased in regards to price for content comparison; you really do get your money’s worth in my opinion. For me, personally, this breaks down to about two months-plus of regular usage per pencil.
Water-resistant does not mean waterproof, and yet this liner offers a wonderfully long wear time. I have occasionally noticed a bit of smudgy product displacement about the outer corner of my eyes late in the afternoon and on toward evening every now and again (never once on the upper lids). Although, I have yet to find another eyeliner to date that has not, at some point in the day, managed to work itself out of place on occasion.
Dabbing a touch of powder under my eyes to set my foundation tends to help prevent premature smudging, increasing its overall longevity. I also enjoy Clinique’s Quickliner For Eyes, and even this product has been known to smudge just a tad bit in the outer corner of my eye a time or two after a long day’s trials and tribulations. The kicker, Cover Girl is around ten dollars cheaper.
Removal is easy as can be; I simply wipe it off at the end of the day with my normal makeup remover and rinse with water. No raccoon eyes the following morning and no colored smudges upon my pillow linens from this product whatsoever. My personal favorites for eye makeup removal, Clinique’s Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent and Lancome’s Effacial Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover.
Convenient Purchasing Locations
Available at a number of retailers nationwide such as Walgreens, Walmart, Target and so forth, this product is extremely easy to procure. I picked up my first Perfect Point Plus at my local grocer. Pricing does vary, but you can generally expect to pay between $3 - $5 dollars per pencil.
If you live near a Sam’s Club, the Midwest’s equivalent to Costco in the northwest, they are currently offering a three-pack of eyeliner pencils (two black onyx and one espresso) for $9.97
Recommendation
The Perfect Point Plus is a great drugstore brand eyeliner, one I highly recommend it for those seeking an inexpensive liner offering good product longevity as well as easy, versatile application at an exceptionally reasonable price.
