| BeeCharmer's Full Review: Cover Girl Professional Eye Enhancers 4-Kit Shadow... |
Cover Girl brand cosmetics were a frequently purchased cosmetic line throughout my teen years. The price was incredibly reasonable and I was sure to find a color selection that was bright and vivid. I was a bit of an adventurous soul, good grief, among my favorite beauty items back then was a can of Aqua Net. I admit to it. Yet the clothing, sprayed hair, and makeup choices of those Days of Old are definitely something of the past. I currently prefer earthy shades.
But a lapse in memory, or perhaps just the occasional poor judgment of a frazzled, blurry-eyed Mom on the go has reared its ugly head once again. I bought this Cover Girl eye shadow compact a couple of months ago while picking up photos at our local drugstore. The four pack of colors were inexpensive and the colors looked promising. What a deal! Or was it?
Good Concept, Poor Quality
The Professional Eye Enhancers 4 Kit Shadows are designed with the thought that each of the colors should, could, or may be applied according to the convenient Cover Girl application chart they provide with each purchase. From lash line to brow, this little chart has seemingly got your application and beauty needs in mind. I purchased the kit entitled, Country Woods.
Problem is, I found no regular use for two shades in the kit. One was much too light to make a difference and the other much too dark for my taste. At least for my preference of eye coverage. This shadow is also dry and rather chalky.
I like tones that are rich, while complimenting my complexion. However the lighter tones I had found somewhat appealing in my ‘what a deal’ kit turned out to be not as rich in color as I would have liked.
And, as it also turned out, the quality of product hasn’t gotten much better over the years. The deal I believed I was getting by purchasing the 4 Kit Shadows on sale really was no bargain. In this case, I got what I paid for. Thank goodness it wasn’t full price.
Inferior Case and Applicator
When I purchase makeup these days, even a line of relatively inexpensive cosmetics like Cover Girl, I expect the product’s packaging to stay intact for a reasonable amount of time. Much like the problems I had with their line of powder compacts, the lid of this eye shadow has a tendency to come loose much too easily. And when this occurs while toting the compact about in your purse, imagine the mess that can ensue thereafter. My purse has a black lining, after a bit of jostling, the cover came loose and I had shadow residue within my purse and on my car keys.
The little sponge tipped applicator is just about worthless. Both ends are padded, one with a rounded end while the other boasts a tapered, pointed design. It is not the design I have a problem with, per say, it is the fact that one of these spongy applicator pads fell off the wand within days of its purchase. Phooey!
Application Results
The eye shadow colors fade before my day is completed. I don’t mean to quibble, as I certainly can reapply a shadow... But since the kit was lacking any redeeming qualities elsewhere, this just added to my overall feeling of disappointment in this compulsive purchasing decision.
I have found that the Cover Girl eye shadows contained in this kit crease fairly quickly after application. Those dark little lines of caked product upon your lids can easily be remedied by the swipe of a finger or a corner of a Kleenex, but I’d rather not bother with it again. This was a ‘deal’ that turned out not to be such a bargain. I can live with that. But I won’t fall for the price cutting lure again, it's just not worth it in the end.

Overall Thoughts
The texture of the Cover Girl shadow feels quite nice when being applied, somewhat silky and sheer. However, the dryness of the product causes it to leave residue upon my cheeks during the process of application as well. I don’t care for this in the least, as darker shades can leave telltale traces of shadow beneath your eyes making it appear as if you are tired in certain light.
*Hint*
If you do in fact choose to use Cover Girl, blow upon the applicator prior to applying the color to your lids. It can save you the hassle of cosmetic repair when all is said and done, so to speak.
I was fairly pleased with one shade within the compact I purchased, but since this is a four shade product, my overall ambivalence for one color makes the entire purchase basically moot.
The relatively inexpensive price tag for this cosmetic is alluring, to say the least. The array of what appear to be promising colors are appealing, while they lie within the case. But as for personal results upon application, I will pass the next Cover Girl sale item that I lay eyes upon, despite my often overwhelming desire to pick up a bargain every now and again.
