gooberpyle's Full Review: Craftsman 18 In. Gas Chain Saw, 42cc
Chain Brake In front of the top handle closer to the front of the saw is another handle looking device. It's the chain brake. If you fail to unlock it, the blade will not turn when you rev the engine.
Tool-less Chain Adjustment The tool-less chain adjustment in appearance is simply a big plastic nut holding a plastic cover over the bar and the sprocket. The plastic cover contains a small adjustable steel rod which fits into the bar. Through clockwise rotation of a small plastic knob on the cover, the turning screw applies pressure to the bar, moving the bar forward and tightening the chain.
What you need to be aware of is if you ever remove the adjustment cover, be sure the small steel adjusting screw is lined up with the appropriate hole in the bar. Skip this step and the chain will continuously fall off.
Gas & Oil The gas and oil caps are on the side instead of the top. At first this seems like an odd position. The first time you add gas or oil the reasoning becomes clear. No obstructions and easy to drain. Great idea. If it seems like I'm praising a feature which is common, the last time I used a chainsaw was in 1976.
Starting Press the primer bulb a few times, set the choke, crank till it takes off then back off the choke. After using it for a while, it starts up easily. The short pull cycle is something to get used to. I'm accustomed to pulling a rope back practically at arm length. Not anymore. I suppose this is good but I wonder if you end up pulling the same with shorter pulls.
Power As more of the bar engages wood, as in larger logs, the cutting flattens out. If all you ever cut were small diameter logs and branches you would never notice this.
