I have to say that I am a far cry from being a manly man, nor am I anywhere near being a manly woman. But I wanted to participate in this write-off celebrating members Hawgwyld and Joubert, because I participated last year and had fun writing my review. While its a little bit of a different concept this year, I still felt compelled to be a part of it.
I received this Craftsman 18 pc. Screwdriver Set as a Christmas gift from my brother about two years back, when I moved into a rented home with a co-worker. He didnt just but this set for me because he felt like it. I asked for this exact set from my parents for Christmas because I knew I would need to have some tools in the house. Im not exactly a handy person, but I do know how to use a screwdriver!
This set comes with 18 pieces. 9 straight heads, 6 phillips heads, and 3 torx heads. The straight head screwdrivers come in sizes, 5/16, 3/16, 1/4, and 1/8. The Phillips blades come in sequential order #0-#3 and the Torx come in T10 and T15. As you can see, this doesnt add up to 18 pieces. This is just your standard set of screwdrivers. Added in is another piece to most size, except that the shaft of the screwdriver is longer than its buddy that is the measurement. This makes for good use when you have a small space to get into and need a small shaft to your screwdriver, or if you need a longer one to reach into something.
All of these screwdrivers are made of a hard white, see-through plastic with a bulb-like base. The plastic has red-stripping alternating with the white plastic and a blue casing around the steel part of the screwdriver. This seems to be the typical Craftsman way of doing things and has not changed much over the years. They are only now coming out with other screwdrivers that do not have this pattern of color. As with most of Craftsman screwdrivers, the red and white handle has vertical grooves to make this tool easy to hold onto, even when you are dealing with a stubborn screw.
~*~ MY THOUGHTS ~*~
While in our rented home, my roommate and I really didnt have much use for these screwdrivers, because our landlord had everything fixed. We pretty much used them for putting things together that we had bought, or hanging up pictures.
I found that when I moved into my new home two weeks ago, that I needed these screwdrivers frequently. Unscrewing wall plates around outlets so that we could paint, taking down light fixtures to be cleaned, even using them again to hang up pictures with anchors. Sure I would have liked to have an electric screwdriver because it just makes things so much easier, but for small jobs...this Craftsman 18 pc. Screwdriver Set did the trick.
For what I have seen, these screwdrivers are pretty durable, as long as you dont use them improperly. I have this particular set for a little over 2 years and have not yet had a problem with them. My dad has had a smaller set for over 12 years and they look almost brand new. The regular price for this set is $29.99, but if you can catch the sale that Sears has every so often (most likely around Christmas), you can pick this set up for a nice sum of $19.99.
Like all Craftsman tools, you can have these screwdrivers replaced at any Sears store if one is damaged or broken. This great warranty is why I tend to lean towards Sears when buying tools because you just never know what might happen. Though, knock on wood, nothing has happened to my set as of yet.
Storing these screwdrivers is not really a big deal. If you have a toolbox, then by all means, that is the place for them. Some people even keep them handy in a kitchen drawer in case they are needed right away. I found myself without anywhere to keep these screwdrivers when I received them two years ago. Our kitchen drawers were just stuffed to the max already. And I didnt want to leave them in the plastic container that they were bought in, so I headed to Sears to find myself a small toolbox to store them in. Just keep them away from water to prevent rusting and you should have no problem.
So if you have some small repair jobs and need a handy screwdriver, this is the set for you because you will have no problem finding one to suit your needs. Get this set for any man...or woman in your life and they will have no complaints!
~ Happy Screwing!
