Pros: Easy to use. Tape end stay in place better. Durable.
Cons: A little expensive, but worth it.
This is my fifth simply short review. I started naming some of my reviews this way due to the simple design of these tools. Sometimes we forget to mention these simple often used tools. Now on to my review of the Craftsman 25 ft. Bottom Lock Tape.
Being an old fashioned guy, its hard to get me to try new things sometimes. I own no less then five tape measures, and four of them are Craftsman brand. These bottom locking tapes really had very little appeal to me, until I got the opportunity to use on. During our recent remodeling project, one of the workers had one of these tapes. I watched him use it to measure great length without the help of a second person to hold the end for him. I asked him about the tape, and he gave me a chance to use it first hand. The next time that I got to Sears, I bought one of my own.
Tape Measures are Tape Measures.
The first thing different about this tape that you will notice is: there isnt a thumb lock to stop the tape from recoiling. This tape has a lever on the bottom which is held in to pull out the tape, and retract it. By releasing the lever the tape stops at the position. Without the tension of the spring pulling against the tape it is much easier to keep the hook end of the tape in place. More or less this tape works opposite to the workings of a normal tape. The end has three rivets holding the hook in place. This adds durability to the hook and tape end. The length of the tape is 25 feet, and the width is 1 inch. The tape is made of acrylic-coated steel, and is yellow with two colored markings. The standard measurements are black and in increments of 1/16. There are also markings for your studs and trusses that are in red color. Also when you get above 1 foot this tape tells you such measurements as for example: 3ft 3 in. is in red to make the conversion from inches to feet easier. This is a nice feature for construction people or homeowners. The outside case is made of a very durable polycarbonate with a very grip able rubber type material in just the right areas. This tape weighs about one pound, and also comes with a belt clip for hanging off of your tool belt or pocket. The belt clip is removable. This item is covered under the Craftsman Lifetime Warranty. Should it fail to live up to your standards return it.
This was my first, but not my last.
I dont know about everyone else, but it is hard for me to stretch a regular thumb-locking tape out more than 10 feet and lock it without the end slipping off. I have had much better success with this bottom locking tape. The tape only has tension when I want it too, and seems to stay in place a whole lot better. I will also mention that this Craftsman model is built very well, and from past experience I know that they are very durable. I still have the first Craftsman tape that I bought over 15 years ago, and use it to this day. I absolutely recommend the Craftsman 25 ft. Bottom Lock Tape for anyone. All of these people will benefit from buying one of these tapes: home owners, construction workers, or anyone else that needs to measure something.
