I have one of those lawns that are a nightmare to cut. It is full of little hills, bumps, and the occasional hole. When I would finish cutting the lawn, no matter how hard I worked at it, came out looking un-even. That I had done a total chop job with the wheels set at different heights.
My parents, who's lawn always looked perfect, live on a lake in the Missouri Ozarks. Their house is built on a steep and very rocky hill. How could their lawn look perfect, while mine looked so bad? The answer was that they cut their lawn with the Craftsman 22 inch Deck Rear Bag Mulcher Mower.
Ok, I can see what your question is? Why would one lawn mower make a big difference in how a it cut the grass. The reason is that the Craftsman 22 inch Deck Rear Bag Mulcher Mower has large 14 inch wheels on the back of it. The wheels are large enough that the mower stays even while going over small bumps and holes that a standard mowers wheels would dip in to causing that un-even look from the blade dipping down farther towards the ground.
The Craftsman like all lawn mowers has its good points and it bad. Since I really like this mower, I will start with the good points.
The Good.
1. 6.75 horsepower motor. I am sure all of you have used a lawn mower were when you hit a very thick patch of grass, the engine would either slow down, or stall. I have yet to see anything slow down this mower.
2. 22 inch cutting blade. The larger the cutting blade, the fewer times I have to walk back and fourth across my lawn.
3. Mulching Blade. I hate having to empty the bag on a lawn mower. No matter how careful I am, I always spill part of it, and get a good amount on me. The mulching blade cuts it up fine enough that you can leave it on your lawn without seeing it. The mulched grass then become fertilizer for your grass.
4. Self Propelled. No more hard pushing. You just guide it and let it do its job.
5. Rear Bag. If you feel the need to bag your grass, the bag sits in back of the mower. The plus to this is when you have to cut around trees, fences, and other obstacles. The bag does not get in the way so you can cut right up to the obstacle.
6. 14 inch wheels in the back. Helps going over those little bumps and holes. Goes over small obstacles without you having to lift the back end up.
The Bad
1. Self propelled with no speed control. This mower pulls you along at one speed, and one speed only. There are times when you want the mower going slow around obstacles. To slow down you either need to shut off the self propelled, or hold back the mowers speed with muscle power.
2. No engine speed control. If you are cutting rather thin grass, and don't need the full power, to bad. The engine gives you full power all the time.
3. Cold blooded. When the mower has not been run for awhile, it takes quite a few pulls for it to fire up. Then until it fully warms up, the engine will run pretty rough.
Because of those three reasons I listed in the bad category, I own this lawn mower. My mother, who is in her 60's, just didn't have the strength to hold back this mower. In fact, I think she ran it into the lake more then one time with her right behind it. When my parents decided they need a mower with a bit less power, the Craftsman 22 inch Deck Rear Bag Mulcher Mower was given to me.
As for the durability. Last fall I made the mistake of not putting the lawn mower away after cutting the grass for the last time. I found it sitting in the back yard after a long hard winter. I gave the primer a few pushes, and to my surprise it started right up.
