There is nothing like the satisfaction that I get, when I do a repair job on something that is out of my league. I’m not a mechanic by trade, or am I really all that mechanically inclined. I really have very little faith in myself when it comes to fixing my lawn mowers, or my compact tractor. Heck, I know people who can look at a nut or bolt, and say that is a ½” nut. I’m definitely not one of them. This and the fact that my tools are kept about 50 yards from where I would do any repair work, has made me a very wise tool selector. OK, I’m lazy. I always try to take whatever tools; I think that I will need for the job the first time. I’ve also learned that grabbing my set of Craftsman 3 pc. Adjustable Wrenches is a very good idea.
I’ve been down the cheap road.
Let me start off by saying that in my younger days, money was always a big factor in my tool buying decisions. Don’t get me wrong, I still try to get a bargain but now I look for the tools, and brands that I want to go on sale. The first set of adjustable wrenches that I remember buying was from Harbor Freight Tools. They sell a brand called Pittsburgh Tools which has a lifetime warranty with them. I think that I paid about half the price that I did for my Craftsman set, and got pretty much the same sizes. I will never buy another set of Pittsburgh Tools. The adjustable wrench set is nice to look at, but the functionally of it is worthless. While the Craftsman set is so smooth to adjust the Pittsburgh set grinds, and catches. Sometimes I even need to bounce them off of the workbench to free them up. Also when the Craftsman wrench is tight on the nut or bolt, it stays tight, but the Pittsburgh set loosened and most times slips off. During times when there is more than one nut of the same size to tighten, the Pittsburgh set needs to be adjusted between every one. The Craftsman set stays at the size that you put until you move it. There really is no comparison between these sets, and I only mention it to make sure people understand that you get what you pay for.
What’s in this set?
These wrenches are made of forged steel with the jaws being made of hardened steel. There is a coating applied to each of them that stops chipping, and rusting. There is a thumb wheel which is used to adjust the space between the jaws. This thumb wheel is designed for easy gripping, and moves as smooth as silk. Sizes include 6, 8, and 10 inches, and are the perfect combination for about any job. The 10” wrench is great for big jobs, and the 6” wrench is great for cramped areas. The 8” wrench is my everyday choice, meaning I grab this one first. The jaw opening ranges are as follows:
Model # 44602: 6”wrench from 0 to about 1”
Model # 44603: 8” wrench from 0 to about 1 ¼”
Model # 44604: 10” wrench from 0 to about 1 ½”
There is also a hole in the end of each wrench for hanging them on the wall. These wrenches also come with the Craftsman lifetime warranty, which in my opinion is as good as gold.
What are they good for?
The first thing that I will say about the use or potential uses is there is no replacement for these wrenches if you carry a toolbox in your car. At least one adjustable wrench should be included in any car emergency kit. Also I own a compact tractor, two garden tractors, and two push mowers, which means I’m always working on one or the other of them. Socket set are great, but unless you do repair work for a living, you can’t afford to buy all the sizes including the deep well sockets to match them. This type of wrench has been around a long time due to its ability to adjust to work for about any job. One wrench can tighten or loosen any nut or bolt between 0 and 1 ½” so why carry more? I also use these wrenches for home repair work or to put together such things as furniture, or wood working projects. I must say even if I don’t think I’ll use them, I still take them along on almost every job.
All in All.
Anyone that does any kind of repair work, or services power equipment should own a set of adjustable wrenches. There is no replacement for the durability, and versatility of this set. As I said before you can get cheaper adjustable wrenches, but you will soon find out that they are not worth a second look. Wait for these to go on sale, and pick up a set.
