Pros: Durability, versatility, and cost.
Cons: No tray.
My Dad started out purchasing tools at whatever the cost and wherever he could find them. He soon learned that just because you saved a dollar now that you will not save a dollar in the long run. The cheap tools usually broke during the first use and he ended up going out and purchasing another tool. I learned from my Daddy's mistakes. Too bad I did not learn quick enough when it comes to picking out a good woman on the first try. I had to learn on the second go around. You remember when you were in trouble and your mother would holler at you, "Wait till your father gets home" and he would take you to the wood shed. Unbeknownst to your mom, he was teaching you how to use tool in the wood shed as punishment. This was a life learning experience for me.
In the olden days I used to get tired of people putting down the tools from Sears. So, when I became old enough to pay for tools myself, where do you think that I went? Yep, I went to Sears. The money that I saved in just the individual tools alone was astronomical. When they first came out with screwdrivers, you had to have all different types of screwdrivers for different types of screws. If you love Craftsman tools and such as the case with me, then you will love this little 8 piece set of assorted screwdrivers by Craftsman, this 8 piece set can be found at Sears, K-Mart, and even Ace Hardware for only $9.99. You used to be only able to find these at Sears but, since they have merged with a whole bunch of different store such as K-Mart and Ace Hardware the availability is tremendous. The prices and warranty still remain the same no matter which store that you go to. If you were to purchase any Craftsman product at any of these retailers, you will not need a receipt, just take it back to the store and they will replace the product.
This 8 piece set includes a variety of assortment of different sizes. These include 4 standard and 4 Phillips screwdrivers, they include for the Phillips: PO x 2-1/2", P1 x 3", P2 x 4", and P2 x 6", and for the standard or straight slot ones these include: 1/8" x 2", 1/8" x 4", 3/16" x 6", ¼" x 4". These have a more universal design to them and are made of heat treated alloy steel to prevent rusting and to help them in the strength department. Each of these screwdrivers are precision ground so that they fit accurately into the screw, each of the four Phillips have clear handles and the slotted type handles are red and clear, and these screwdrivers fit well inside of the palm of your hand. The high contrast marking on the handles make these easier to read. They have the size stamped on the both sides of the handles. The handles that are on these screwdrivers are impact resistant and chemical resistant.
This is an excellent set to keep inside of the glove box of the car for emergencies. All of these screwdrivers weigh just a little over one pound for the whole set, but unlike other sets that come with a tray or pouch, this has none. If there was a tray that would enhance the accessibility of this set. But, this problem with this set can be solved by using a foam cut out, from the year to year they are always creating new tools. So, you may want to keep extra foam around to make fitting newer tools inside of your drawer. They do sell them but why not save the foam that you get in packing from the mail that you get daily.
I have been using these for several years and not one time did these ever break or strip the head of a screw. They are made of hardened heated steel and are very durable. I have used these with a pair of pliers, when I stumble across any stubborn screws and not broken any of the blades in the process. I have left these under the hood of the car, kicked them around and even ran them over accidentally, started the engine up and heard a rattling around, when I found them, they barely had a scratch on them from hitting the fan blade, just some nicks on the handles. If you are using the right size these will usually fit snuggly at first, then just give the screwdriver a big twist and you will rip the screw free of whatever it is holding in place.
The really nice thing about this set is that they are all assorted, you may use these only once in a while, but when you happen onto one of these types of screws, you are happy that you have one of this type of screwdriver are inside of your set. I don't know about you but, these are probably the most used part of my tools because they are so handy. A lot of times I do not have time to go through all of my regular screwdrivers and looking for the exact size, instead I just grab the whole tray out of my drawer, which has an assortment of different screwdriver sizes, and as long as I have remembered to put them away after the last use, I can easily pick out the right size because of the high contrast marking on the handles, this helps make the size stand out more than my older screwdrivers.
This is not a bad price for a set as versatile as this one, $9.99 may be a little on the high side for only 8 screwdrivers, but the new innovation of the different colored handles makes up for the cost. You will be surprised at how much you will actually use this set. Just because it is so easy to grab this instead of searching for the exact screwdriver, and making sure by grabbing a tray that you have made up will help you out, so that you do not have to go back and search again if you are wrong. This one set is usually a normal fixture inside of a lot of mechanics tool boxes, and I am no different, it is also in mine. I would highly recommend that you add these to you repertoire of tools, especially if you want to have a easier go of your job. Five stars for durability, strength, versatility, and ease of use, and all the different types of heads of screws that these will fit make these worth every penny.
