Craftsman Brass Adjustable Twist Hose Nozzle
Have you ever left a store, and had the uneasy feeling you had been sold a Bill of Goods? While at Sears, I intended to pick up a cheap brass garden hose nozzle. For years I had typically purchased the cheapest I could find, thinking that there could be little difference in brass nozzles. I looked at them as a commodity item.
The clerk showed me this nozzle, and gave me a sales pitch about the benefits of the stainless steel orifice. He explained, that the steel being stronger than brass, would not deform as easily, and that whereas a brass orifice actually wears out due to water flow, the steel would last much longer.
I have to admit he had a good presentation. I ended up getting the nozzle for around $9.00. An outrageous price, I thought. Walking to the parking lot, I began to have "Buyers Remorse". How could such an expensive nozzle be a good value, when I could probably buy three or four cheap ones for its purchase price?
This was six to eight years ago. For me this has been a very economical purchase. With cheap nozzles, I probably would have gone through several by now. Plus, I have had the benefit of using a good quality piece of equipment.
DURABILITY
The brass used must be better than average. It has been run over by the car on concrete. It has been outside in severe temperatures and full of ice.
The end of the nozzle, steel, has retained its original shape, and the spray pattern has remained consistent since day one.
Grade: A+
QUALITY
Like I said, I felt that a nozzle, was a nozzle, was a nozzle. Not so. This one is obviously made with tighter tolerances, and uses quality materials. You can feel the difference when you use it. The spray pattern adjustment is precise, consistent and smooth. My model has a single "O" ring, whereas the current one apparently has two. I just looked at the "O" ring, and it is still in fine condition, and I have never had any leakage with the single "O" ring.
Grade: A
MY USAGE
I have used it year around since I purchased it. My usage is probably about average, except for thing I use it for. I have found that I can pull an old fence post out of the ground, with minimal digging, using this nozzle as a water drill. I literally push it into the ground along side of the post and erode the soil. Along with a little rocking back and forth of the post, I can pull the post out of the ground. This has resulted in small pebbles lodged in the nozzle. I just take it apart and remove them, and the nozzle is fine.
PRICE
I paid approximately $9.00. Cheap in the long haul.
I checked Sears online store and it is currently on sale there:
$6.74 Reg. Price $8.99
Save $2.25
Sale Ends 09/29/01
DRAWBACKS
Being a fairly hefty metal object, it can dent a cars paint or sheet metal.
Metal is cold in the hand at lower temperatures.
Adjusting the spray pattern and shut-off is a two handed operation.
