This has to be the best invention since sliced bread! The idea is really a quite simple one, it's amazing that someone didn't think of this 40 years ago! Simply lay your watering hose on your grass in the pattern you want the sprinkler to go, plop the sprinkler on the hose, and turn on your water. Sit back and watch it do the work for you!
Description of the Traveling Sprinkler 79054
This sprinkler looks like a small tractor. It has three wheels - two in the back and one smaller wheel in the front which has a groove in it, so that it fits right onto the hose. The back wheels are spiked so they will dig into the grass and "travel" across your yard. It is a heavy duty unit too, weighing a hefty 22 pounds. I have gotten bruises on my legs from moving this to the appropriate area of my yard! It is made of cast iron, and should last forever!
On top of the sprinkler there are duel arms extending out, one on each side. These go around in a circular fashion, making a complete 360 degree circle. It has two speeds, a high and a low - and a neutral option if you want the sprinkler to remain in one spot and not travel across your yard.
There is even a valve that automatically shuts off the water when the sprinkler reaches the end of the hose! See, it waters your yard all by itself! It takes the work out of watering the grass!
First and foremost, you need to have a decent amount of water pressure before this unit will work the way it was intended. We have a ton of water pressure, but some friends who have this same sprinkler don't have nearly as much and our tractor does a better job of watering our yard then theirs does.
We have a very large yard, and this sprinkler is a God send for us. I remember what it was like before we had this watering tractor! We would put the old sprinklers in a certain spot, time it for one hour, and then move it to the next spot and time it again - what a pain in the neck!
With the Traveling Sprinkler 79054 we usually start in one corner of our yard (it's so big it is dubbed the neighborhood playground), and make an "S" pattern with the hose ... weaving the hose in and out of the areas we want the sprinkling tractor to cover. In several hours the unit has watered all those areas, and shuts itself off when it's done! ( You can put the hose in any pattern you wish).
How It Works
Attach the tractor to your garden hose. After laying and stretching out the hose in the desired watering pattern, you then put the tractor at the far end of the hose, placing the front grooved wheel on top of the hose. The back wheels should straddle the hose. Turn on the sprinkler. If you want the yard to get quite soaked, use the lo speed. But if you want just a light watering then use the high speed, this will make it travel faster and thus not soak the grass.
The water pressure will make the unit move, and the back spiked wheels will dig into your lawn slightly and pull the hose along with it as it travels. The hose will double over on itself eventually. Amazing how this sprinkler can pull it's own hose! It really works and does a fine job. When it gets to the beginning of the hose (also the end of the watering job) the valve will hit another device that fits onto the hose, and the sprinkler will shut itself off.
This Traveling Sprinkler is able to pull a 200 foot vinyl hose, and it will shoot out water up to 60 feet in diameter! (Again, depending on how powerful your water pressure is). It is perfect for large yards.
One Problem We've Encountered
Every once in a while the sprinkler will dig itself into a little hole and make a mess of the grass, and the water will then pool there and it ends up quite muddy. This has only happened a couple times in the two years we have owned this sprinkler.
Good For Your Yard
I believe that the spiked back wheels are actually quite good for my yard, because as they move, they aerate the yard. (Thatching machines do this in the spring when they are collecting all the dead grass).
We have used this sprinkler many times. I let my daycare kids run through it on a hot and sunny day. We are able to put the hose in a pattern so that the sprinkler waters the grass in front of our house first, and then it turns the corner and waters the grass on the side of our house!
It has been my experience that Sears stands behind their products, but his Traveling Sprinkler 79054 does come with a two year warranty. Minimal assembly is required.
We absolutely love this sprinkler! It is very expensive, in Alaska the cost right now is nearly $80, but it is worth every penny! It has saved us tons of time and energy! If you have a small yard, I wouldn't spend the money on this kind of sprinkler if all you need is one stationary sprinkler to start with. But if, like our family, you have a large lawn I would highly recommend this tractor style of traveling sprinkler to you without any hesitation at all.
Oh yeah, to avoid getting soaked when you turn the unit on, make sure that you have the water supply turned off at the hose, then when the tractor is in place and ready to go (and you are safely out of the 30 foot range) turn the water supply back on and it's off to the races!
