We consistently have a generous stock of Crayola art supplies. My children and I like to draw, paint, color, and create. At 8 & 12 years of age, neither of our daughters are fond of the typical restaurant provided crayons and activity sheet. Truth be known, they have never cared for the crayons given at most eating establishments, because they are not Crayola brand. I have carried some sort of Crayola product in my purse since the girls were toddler-aged. Both of my girls like the Crayola 24 Blenders And Basics. This set includes 24 Crayola colored pencils, a pad of paper, and is all tucked into a tri-fold vinyl carrying pouch. Two of these sets fit into my purse, allowing tote along fun for the girls.
As mentioned, the Crayola 24 Blenders And Basics set includes 24 colored pencils and a pad of white paper. The white paper pad measures 3 ½” x 5”, the same size as the two colored pencil packages. The tri-fold vinyl pouch offers a designated space for the paper pad, the 12 count blenders, and the 12 count basics. This folds into a portable 7 ¼” x 4” x 1” unit. A flap fastens onto the top, using a small Velcro circle.
Within the one box of Crayola colored pencils, you receive 12 Crayola Blenders. These double-ended pencils arrive pre-sharpened, and the pencil color is exhibited by paint color on the shaft of the pencil. Colors include:
Light Yellow / Dark Yellow
Light Orange / Dark Orange
Light Lime / Dark Lime
Light Aqua / Dark Aqua
Light Blue / Dark Blue
Light Peach / Dark Peach

There are suggestions on the back portion of this box that offer coloring techniques. It is explained to the artist that pressure will vary the outcome, as will amount of space colored. When coloring with the blenders, you can lighten a dark shade by coloring over it with the lighter shade. Vice versa, color over a light shade, with a dark shade, to darken. This set allows children to experiment with shading, and to grasp understanding of shading. The top portion of the cardboard box can be removed, allowing clear visibility of top shades, or you might choose to leave it on, as there are two windows for viewing top and bottom color. A vinyl flap folds over the pocket in which this set is stored in, keeping all 12 pencils in place.
The other 12 count box of Crayola colored pencils contains 12 CrayolaBasics. These pencils are pre-sharpened, ready for use. Colors in this box include:

Detailed sentences explain basic line techniques – hatching and crosshatching, curved lines, and spacing. A vinyl flap folds over the pocket in which this set is stored in, keeping all 12 pencils in place.
The included Sketch Pad Contains Approximately 50 Sheets Of White Paper. On the back of the white pad, there is a reorder form, allowing you to restock the sketchpad for the following prices:
3 pads = $3.00 + s/h $2.50
6 pads = $4.00 + s/h $3.50
9 pads = $5.00 + s/h $3.50
In addition, sales tax must be added for orders placed from certain states, percentage and applicable states are listed. We have restocked our unit with 3 ½” x 5” paper pads, and we have cut paper strips to include in the set. The option is yours, with the latter being more reasonable.
This set is recommended for children 7 years and up. Pencils are non-toxic and conform to ASTM D-4236. Interesting notation is that these pencils are made from reforested wood, containing NO tropical rain forest wood.
The only drawback to this set, is that – like other colored pencils – they will need to be sharpened. It would have been nice if a sharpener was fit into this package somewhere. I carry an extra MAC make-up sharpener in my purse, so the girls always use that.
After listening to History and Science the Charlotte Mason Way, we put increased focus on journaling, including sketching. The adoration for the Crayola 24 Blenders And Basics set increased, and became a companion to their 'sketch bags'. The girls and I take a sketch journal & drawing supplies, within a bag, to almost all excursions. Although the three journals (Chelsea, Marsia, and mine) contain entire different captures, they are all a reflection of life events. I noticed an increased use of the colored pencils, as popularity gained with sketching.
We have tried the RoseArt brand, but feel that the Crayola colored pencils are superior. The colors are richer, pencils are stronger, and the coverage is more pleasing. I highly recommend the Crayola 24 Blenders And Basics set, and suggest having a pack in your carry-along gear. Children have smaller attention span than adults do, and activities such as this can assist with doctor visits, appointment lag time, and mealtime at restaurants. Even my hubby and I enjoy coloring with these sets.
