| Lisa_J's Full Review: Crayola America's Favorite Top 50 Crayons |
Children that I work with know that I adore Crayola crayons, so during one holiday season one of the children that I cared for gave me the Crayola America's Favorite Top 50 Crayons set. I was thrilled, really. Although I suppose that some might view this set as a collector item, I viewed it as a perfect set to open and share with the little artists I share the day with.
This 50 crayon set is recommended for ages 4 and up. The colors in this collection are the Crayola.com Color Census winners. Crayons in this special edition set are wrapped in a goldlike wrap and packaged within a clear plastic, cylinderlike container. Outside of the wrap, packaging, and notation of the America's Favorite color choices, the crayons are the same as the traditional versions found in time-honored Crayola sets.
As mentioned above, I adore new crayons. I like the fine tips, the smell, perhaps the nostalgic feelings about receiving the traditional back-to-school package. And then there is the educator side of me that thinks about all the fabulous art creations that children produce when given crayons and paper. So really, all things considered this was a wonderful gift for me to receive (especially from one of the little ones I care for).
When it comes to crayons, I truly feel that there is no substitute for Crayola. It is my view that no other brand compares in quality. Other brands tend to be too waxy, break too easy, offer poor coverage, or just simply lack the color variations. Not to mention that some fail to meet safety expectations. With Crayola, you always receive crayons that are non-toxic. The color from the crayons is easy to transfer to paper, you can vary the tone by tension put into crayon application or layers of coloring. Although, as with all crayons, these will break if too much tension is put onto them, I strongly feel that Crayola crayons are stronger than the competitors.
The kids and I used this set a few times, and then when I closed my in-home daycare the set took new meaning - memories of fun coloring sessions with the young children (I was offered and took a position as a director at a new performing arts child care center). At times I look at this set, traditional Crayola colors dressed up and paired with 'favorite' color choices, and think about the fact that these shades were actually selected by visitors to the crayola website. My youngest daughter occasionally uses this set, but really prefers the larger sets, perhaps someday Crayola will release another top 50 set, and because she will be older the concept will mean more to her.
If you are looking for an unique set of Crayola crayons, I strongly recommend the Crayola America's Favorite Top 50 Crayons set. With the unique wrappers, and inclusion of voted color choices, this set is a must have for Crayola enthusiasts!
Are you curious which colors are included in this set? I will share the colors, order of popularity and the year the color was introduced (as per Crayola).
