The Crayola Art Smock is a good addition to the art supply cabinet, either home or child care. Intended for use by children ages 1 and up, this smock works best for toddlers and preschoolers. In addition to art type of uses, this smock can be used as a bib. It is my view that the Crayola Art Smocks are nice for saving the bodice portion of outfits from marker, glue, or paint splatter. If you are looking for a simple art cover up, this is a bargain. However if you want to protect sleeves, I suggest the Crayola Long-Sleeved Art Smock or alternative.
Crayola Art Smocks are made from durable vinyl. The front panel dimensions are 17 1/16" x 14", the smock fits over the head, and ties at the back of the neck and at both sides. The hole for the head is spacious, this said from a mom of a child who, well... has a big head, yet the tie at the back of the neck allows you to snug it to size. These smocks vary with regard to design, but all have Crayola insignia. A large pocket along the bottom of the front pocket, is divided into three. These pockets are good for storing art utensils, and serve in a bib pocket sort of manner, thus catching some paint drips.
This Smock is easy to clean. Crayola instructs us to wipe the smock off with a damp sponge. In my experience there are options for cleaning the Crayola Art Smocks: shower it clean and hang to dry, put it in the washer (gentle cycle) and hang to dry, hose it off and hang to dry, or clean with a baby wipe. Also, for those in the child care field, these smocks have stood up to diluted bleach sanitation.
It has been my experience that the Crayola Art Smocks work best for toddlers and preschoolers. By the time children are in Prekindergarten or Kindergarten, these smocks aren't as efficient as certain larger smocks (available through merchants such as ecmdstore.com). At the center, the Crayola Art Smocks are used in the toddler room.
Toddlers, as understandable, will need assistance in putting the Crayola Art Smocks on and taking them off. The preschool crowd will vary, as some students like to put them on, others don't. We save the "attempt it yourself" persuasion for coat time. More times than not, we prefer to assist the child with taking off the smock, especially when the creative little artist has painted the smock!
With regard to art projects, the Crayola Art Smocks are wonderful for protecting the bodice of clothing, but ineffective with regard to sleeves. Thus being said, it is my experience that children most often get paint onto the bodice area. However I prefer sleeve coverage for certain projects, so we have a variety of art smocks.
In addition to art time use, I have a close friend who uses the Crayola Art Smocks for certain meal times (like spaghetti). She launders the smocks (gentle cycle/hung to dry).
Overall I am pleased with the Crayola Art Smock, both durability and design. This is a reasonable (approx. $3.00) option for home and child care use. Kids like the bright graphics on them. Additionally, children of all ages enjoy art projects, so products like this are a good way to allow messy art project moments. Whether your child is working with markers, glue, or paint, the Crayola Art Smock will protect his/her clothing.
