| Freak369's Full Review: Crayola Doodle Pad |
When it comes to artistic endeavors in this house, my boys are rather reluctant to just sit down and color. It usually takes something that relates to space, math or science to get them motivated to do something artistic so when they asked me to pick up a few of these doodle pads for my neighbors daughter I couldnt resist. I figured that maybe they would sit down with her and draw some pictures or help her out with her letters and numbers. Little did I know that they would go though both pads in under a week, if I had know that I would have stocked up on them when they were on sale. With other doodle or art pads, you get that cheesy cheap off white or cream colored recycled newsprint, rest assured, you are getting Crayola quality with this product so the $1.79 price tag is well worth it in my opinion. Ive had the best luck finding these at Target and Wal-Mart but occasionally find them at K-Mart and Sav-On. The suggested retail price for this is $1.99 but as I said, I picked them up on sale for $1.79 for the price and what you get in the way of quality, this is most definitely worth it.
Crayola Doodle Pad
Sure, there are tons of doodle pads on the market so why bother trying to hunt down the Crayola brand? Simply put, the quality of the paper is better than the knock off or off name brands. Most doodle pads are made up of recycled newsprint so there is a chance that the quality you are hoping for wont be there. This means that the pages might rip when being removed from the book or there might be small flecks of paper by products on the pages. So far I havent seen any of these issues with the Crayola brand doodle pad and I doubt that I will in the future. It isnt a bright white like professional art pads but it is a nice clean white that will allow your child to use any color they like and have it show up as is instead of slightly off due to a cream colored background [newsprint].
The twelve inch by nine inch doodle pad is large enough for the younger crowd to use with the greatest of ease. Since this is larger than most art and doodle pads kids can create bigger and more detailed pictures. The weight of the paper isnt listed on the cover but I will venture to say that it is a little less than twenty pounds since it is a little thinner than the twenty pound paper that I use for my computer printer. You get sixty sheets in each book so there is more than enough paper to entertain a child for a few hours. Since the paper is a little thinner than copy or printer paper some younger kids might have a little trouble when using colored pencils or crayons, my neighbors daughter got a little frustrated when using this pad the first few times because she would work hard on drawing a picture only to end up ripping it when she applied too much pressure to a crayon and ended up ripping it.
This doodle pad is great when using colored pencils, gel pens and certain markers. Some types of markers will bleed through the pages on to other sheets so make sure you test them out to see which ones will work best. I try to use the last sheet of the book to test out different markers and pens to avoid wasting sheets. While this says that you can use paints on it, you will end up with warped sheets. If you want to use this for finger painting, remove the sheets from the book first to avoid having paint all over the rest of the book and pages. Make sure to cover the table with plenty of paper when using paints to avoid a lengthy clean up time.
Dont worry about older kids being turned off by the doodle pad format, my boys loved drawing on this and using it to make small booklets for my neighbors daughter to color in. I was really surprised at how well the pages stood up against her flipping through them and coloring on them. If you are tired of your printer paper disappearing when the kids get the urge to be artistic, invest a few dollar in this art pad for them so youll never again have to scramble to Office Depot at 8:45 to restock your paper supply. Smaller kids might have a little trouble ripping out the pages so you might want to help them with this, if one of the first few pages is ripped incorrectly and leaves a small piece behind, it can and will effect the way the others are torn out.
The Bottom Line
This would make a great art pad for any little artist to work with. You can also pick up the Crayola Art Framers Draw & Paint pad to show off their creations by letting them draw directly on the sheets or using them as frames and gluing the artwork on top of them. My sons really liked working with this type of paper and I was really impressed that it wasnt the bland and boring recycled newsprint that you get with most doodle pads. For the price, number of sheets and durability, I highly recommend this for any little artist.
As always, thanks for the visit
