Both of my daughters have a tote along art bag that contains a sketch journal, various writing utensils, and art supplies. I encourage them to journalize via words or sketches. This has been a nice way for them to keep a diary of life events, capture thoughts, or simply take note of nature observations. In addition to using the supplies at home, they take these tote bags along with them on day trips, vacations, and errands. Crayola Erasable 10 ct. Colored Pencils is one of the art supply sets in my 8 year old daughters bag. She enjoys using traditional style of colored pencils, such as the set of Crayola 24 Blenders And Basics, but this 10ct. set of erasable pencils is also an enjoyable set. Marisa calls this her designer pencil set. She is pleased with this unique set, they have held up well, and they truly add an interesting touch to her art adventures.
There are three primary differences between the Erasable Colored Pencils and traditional Crayola colored pencils: barrel design, they're erasable, color hues. Whereas the traditional colored pencils have a barrel that offers a solid color reflective of the lead color, the Erasable pencils have a designer barrel. This barrel offers a solid color background reflective of lead color, and each one has multi-colored zany graphics that look like squiggly lines, starbursts, and confetti. On the top of the pencil barrel there is a solid white eraser, and the pencil lead arrives pre-sharpened. These pencils are easy to color with, offering color with either light or hard depression. The amount of pressure will vary the hue slightly. Thankfully the lead appears durable, not breaking easy when the little artist pushes hard. Don't misunderstand, yes the lead will break as with any pencil, but the pencil is slightly forgiving. I feel that it is important to tell you that the coloring provided by these pencils varies from that of traditional pencils; the hues appear slightly muted in comparison. Importantly, as indicative by the name, these are erasable. I was pleased that they are fairly easy to erase, offering a unique disappearing twist to a traditional art supply favorite.

Although the colored hues are slightly muted in comparison to traditional colored pencils, I don't consider that to be a non-sale factor. It has been my experience that most 'erasable' art supplies vary from the non-erasable counterparts. I do feel that it would be nice to include a sharpener with this set, as it is inevitable the pencils will eventually need sharpening. Perhaps they Crayola don't want the packaging to become thicker? The exclusion of a sharpener wasn't a challenge for us because she already had one, but it is a worthwhile mention, yet I won't rate down because most households have a pencil sharpener.
Overall my daughter, 8, is pleased with the Crayola Erasable 10 ct. Colored Pencils. She has been experimenting with drawing technique and appreciates that these colored pencils actually erase. Although the color emitted is slightly muted, in comparison to traditional colored pencils, the coverage offered is consistent. In addition to using these erasable pencils for drawing, she uses them in color books, has used them on school reports, and she has completed some homework assignments with them. Speaking of which, with back-to-school upon us, it is time to make sure these designer pencils are sharpened and ready to hit the paper.
Considering the durability, uniqueness, and how much my daughter likes the Crayola Erasable 10 ct. Colored Pencils, it is easy to extend a recommendation for purchase. These pencils are non-toxic and conform to ASTM D-4236. Although the manufacturer recommended age is 8 and up, I do feel that younger children could successfully use these pencils (with supervision of course).
