| Lisa_J's Full Review: Crayola Erasable 8 ct. Twistables Crayons |
My daughters, children attending my daycare/preschool, and young visitors to our home, have enjoyed coloring with the Crayola Twistables Crayons for a substantial period of time. During a recent shopping excursion at a local drug/variety store, I was taking a traditional stroll down the arts and craft aisle, when I saw Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons. Naturally, I purchased two sets. Recommended for ages 4 and up, I felt that these crayons would be well received by the preschool crew.
Although the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons are slightly similar to Crayola Twistables Crayons, in the manner they work, there are evident differences. The Crayola Twistables Crayons are 7 in length, these crayons are 4-5/8 in length, from eraser top to the bottom of the color tip. All styles of Crayola Twistables Crayons have a clear plastic shaft with a Crayola crayon inside. When you turn this barrel, the color is extended out of the bottom of the color unit, in a manner similar to a mechanical pencil yet with a twist versus a click. This process is easy. To date, none of the Crayola Twistables Crayons have broke, and the length of use is spectacular.
As predicted, the preschool children adore the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons. In actuality, so do the older children. One of the primary reasons the children like these crayons, is because they truly are ERASABLE! On the top of these crayons there is a white eraser. When I first purchased the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons, I tugged at the eraser and I was pleased that it stayed attached. Have you ever purchased art products that claimed to be erasable, yet they werent? I have. I was reluctant to believe that these crayons would work as advertised. But, I am thrilled to inform you that the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons are in fact ERASABLE, and that this is an easy task to accomplish. With a gentle rub from the built-in eraser, the color is swept away, leaving no smears.
This was especially welcomed by a 10-year-old boy that I care for (he has perfectionist tendencies, which used to hinder his desire toward artistic endeavors). My youngest daughter often prefers to complete homework assignments with colored pencils, markers, gel pens, or crayons. The Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons are terrific for this task. And, me, well, I just like Crayola and artful adventures, so it should come as no surprise that I like this set. **smile**

It is important to note that the colored appearance of the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons varies from that of the Crayola Twistables Crayons. The Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons emit colors that are approximately one hue lighter. In addition, the appearance of the colored surface yields more white area than that of colorings done with the Crayola Twistables Crayons. This is more noticeable on white paper versus typical color-book stock. Also, there is a slight drag when writing with the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons. These are not complaints, just observations; I continue to extend a high recommendation for this set.
As mentioned in my original review of Crayola Twistables Crayons, I dont feel that this set is an economical choice for traditional classroom usage. I paid $4.49 per set, but the prices of Crayola products is generally higher at that store. crayola.com lists a suggested retail price of $3.99. I justified the expense due to the uniqueness of the product, and my curiosity of product function.
After using the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons, and watching the preschool children enjoy them, I phoned my friend Char who works within a contained special needs classroom. She has experienced terrific results when allowing certain children (that have sensory issues) to color with Crayola Twistables Crayons. She purchased a set, and phoned me with incredible excitement. A particular student, although previously reluctant to coloring, colored with the Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons, comforted by the ability to erase mistakes and satisfied with the shorter barrel.
Although the recommended use for Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons is ages 4 and up, they are non-toxic and conform to ASTM D-4236, and I feel that with supervision they are safe for use by certain younger children. The eraser top could present a choking hazard, if bitten off, and I imagine that left unsupervised, children could use the crayons in manners that pose additional dangers. But, like so many toys that end up age-rated due to the potential of lack of adult supervision
these crayons have to bear the ages 4 and up recommendation.
The Eight Crayola ERASABLE Twistables Crayons are fun to color with. Overall, we are pleased with this set and I do recommend them for purchase. Locally I have seen them at one store, but I am sure they will be readily available in the near future. Until then, enjoy online shopping!
