My 17 month old son tried out crayons for the first time not too long ago and decided he liked it. He's quite the little artist but traditional crayons were simply not durable enough for him. As it turned out a friend gave him a set of Bob The Builder Crayons (from RoseArt) right around this same time and they were the "jumbo" style of crayon. He did much better with this kind of crayons so I got in my mind that he needed more of them.
How convenient that an 8 pack of these chunky crayons was on sale for $1.99 at my local grocery store in the kids arts & crafts and school supply aisle. So without so much as a second thought I tossed the Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons into my cart.
After all these years...
I am sure I am not alone that when it comes to crayons the first thing that comes to mind is Crayola. Its a brand that I've known to trust and used during my own childhood as well. The bright yellowish orange and pine green box remains essentially unchanged after all these years (except for a few minor "finishing touches").
I know that as a child, I had a set (well actually several) of these large crayons as well. Due to a propensity for insertion of the regular size crayons up my nostril (I loved the smell, what can I say?) my mother insisted that I use the larger style crayons for some time before I could be trusted with regular sized crayons. I'd like to say that this 8 pack of crayons that I purchased for my son is the exact same package that I would have had almost 30 years ago, but I can't. You see - after all these years, they've gotten better.
One word... washable.
Thank you, Crayon Gods
Yes, Crayola was smart and these crayons marked as Kid's First crayons are now Washable. Thank you, Crayola, the God of Crayons, for keeping Mom's in mind when it comes to kids and their art. Not wanting to stifle my child in any way I encourage him to draw and create with these crayons. And now, I can do so without worry. These crayons are made of a a special washable formula. And it works! If your budding artist decides to draw outside the lines (and they will), you can clean up easily using just a sponge and some warm water. Crayola recommends washing the walls clean as soon as possible for best results and also to check on a small or less visible area first as some paint could flake, etc.
According to Crayola the washable formula was designed for "most walls and non-porous household surfaces". I can attest to the fact that it also cleans up easily should it get on your child's clothing (and it will), using warm soapy water or through the washing machine. A couple words of advice though, be sure to empty pants pockets before doing laundry for stray crayon pieces. If you should happen to put a pair of pants in the dryer with a crayon in the pocket you are in for it. The melted wax will not only smell horrible, but it will ruin and stain everything in that load of laundry. Its not a pretty sight and can be avoided by going through the pockets first. You never know what you'll find emptying pockets before laundry, could be money, candy, toys, who knows!
More, about these great crayons
The Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons are intended to be an introductory crayon. According to the Crayola website they are recommended for ages 3 and older. Now, according to the box they are recommended for age 1 and older. I tend to agree that they are for ages 1 and up, with supervision of course.
Not only do crayon's smell good, but kids often try to eat them too. Crayola knows the appeal of their crayons and has made the Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons (and all their art supplies) to be Non-Toxic. So, should your child consume their crayons, it is not the end of the world. But, be forewarned that it could result in some interesting diaper changes. I haven't been subjected to this yet, but I'm sure other mother's have.
Size & Shape
The Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons are just that, 8 large crayons. Each crayon is 4 inches long and about 1/2 inch around diameter. Longer and wider than traditional crayons these make for a perfect toddler crayon. Not only are they easier for little hands to grasp and control.
In addition, they are definitely more sturdy and harder to break than a traditional crayon. Now, there is no crayon is existence that is break-proof but this one does take quite a beating. Please be mindful watching your child with these crayons, because should they break the small pieces are a definite choke hazard. Take the small pieces away and use them to make a Rainbow crayon by melting the bits and pieces together to form one big blob of a crayon that changes color as you use it.
The colors included in the Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons are traditional. Included in this box are: Violet (purple), Blue, Yellow, Red, Green, Orange, Brown, and Black.
*Please note that the Crayola website lists the colors as: red, blue, green, brown, blue violet, yellow, carnation pink and blue green. We've purchased 2 boxes of these from different stores and have yet to see a carnation pink or blue/green crayon included in the box.
I love the colors of these crayons. They are brilliant, and true to color in name and appearance. What you see is what you get. And, unlike the regular size Crayola crayons which are available in larger quantities you will not find colors such as "Pig Pink", "Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown", and the all-famous "Macaroni and Cheese" color. I think these new names and colors are fun but are they necessary? Not really necessary for toddlers, I say.
Valuable Learning activities
The learning possibilities are limitless for these Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons. Your child's first scribbles are something to be cherished. This is your child putting ink (or wax..) to paper and expressing themself through the world of art. Watching my toddler son enjoy his creativity and be artistic with these chunky crayons has been a riot.
Of course, I try to teach him things like Colors by telling him the name of each crayon and encouraging him to "Try the red one", etc. He is soaking it all in and one day will be quite a fountain of knowledge, I am sure.
The same goes for Shapes. An activity you can do with your child is to draw a simple shape (a square, circle, triangle, or even a dot) and then encourage your child to produce the same shape. At 17 months I haven't gotten anything really closely ressembling my shapes back, but I sure have gotten many masterpieces.
I am extremely pleased with Crayola 8 Ct Kid's First Large Washable Crayons and plan on using them until my son's a bit older and able to use the smaller, regular crayons without destroying them. In the meantime, he is enjoying creating and developing his fine motor skills through art with these chunky large-style crayons. I highly recommend these for your Kid's First crayon and a perfect crayon for toddlers.
