| Freak369's Full Review: Crayola Sidewalk Chalk Eggs and Chicks |
You know Easter is right around the corner when every store you walk into has plastic breakaway eggs, bunnies, colorful foil wrapped candy and faux wicker baskets on display. I came across these are Wal-Mart and they were priced at 2 packages for $3.00 which is a little less than the regular retail price of $2.19 that most other stores seem to be pricing them at. This is a great item to tuck inside Easter baskets instead of having it jam-packed with candy. And for the teachers out there, try checking the retail stores after Easter when these will be marked down. You can save the chick shaped eggs for next Easter and use the egg shaped ones through out the year.
What Is It?
The Crayola Sidewalk Chalk Eggs & Chicks is a six pack of egg shaped chalk that come in assorted colors. Three of the chalk pieces are shaped like standard eggs and three of them are shaped like chicks breaking out of an egg. The eggs are about the same size as a regular edible chicken egg but a bit more oval. The eggs and chicks come packaged in a nice thick plastic case that can be resealed. Dont expect to be able to just pop it open since there are three clear pieces of tape that need to be sliced in order to open it. This is a nice case that resembles an egg carton only its clear. This keeps the pieces from getting banged up or having the colored of the chalk get on each other when they are stored.
Ease of Use
Since these are shaped like an egg, it might take a little while to get used to holding them and drawing with them. Smaller kids seem to have a much easier time adapting to the shape of them and my neighbors daughter had the best time playing with these in the driveway. When you first start out a piece you need to rub it on a rough surface to get it started. Im not sure about this but there seems to be a light coating over the pieces of chalk possibly to protect them from vibration or movement during the shipping process. Once you get a piece started you shouldnt have any trouble with the chalk writing on a surface. Id suggest that these be used on concrete or outside since trying to use them for indoor craft projects will be a little tricky due to the oval shape and not being able to control what you are coloring.
Colors
There seems to be a little bit of variation from set to set but the ones that I purchased came in the following assortment: one yellow chick, one light blue / teal chick, one purple chick. One the side of the chick eggs there is the Crayola name and the rest of it is plain. The chick is popping of the top of the egg but for the most part it is one solid piece of chalk with only a minimal amount of detail to it. The three plain eggs come in orange, pink and light green. Other sets may have slight color variations so make sure you check the display to see if there is an assortment that you like.
Things To Know
These things are sturdy! They got tossed around the driveway and none of them cracked or broken into pieces. You might want to make sure that kids are aware that these are not to be thrown at each other because even though they are make of chalk, they could still hurt someone. This product is non-toxic so you wont have to worry about any of the dust that may come off them hurting the younger kids. When they boys were done using this it washed off their hands with no trouble at all. They really didnt get any on their clothes but there are washing instructions on the package.
When used outside clean up is pretty easy, a few buckets of water should do the trick to get the majority of the colors washed away or you could just squirt down the area with a garden hose. If there is any left over color on the ground simply take a broom and work it over the chalk then rinse. Since this is non-toxic you dont have to worry about it ruining your lawn or being a contaminant in the sewage system.
The Bottom Line
So far these have been perfect for my boys and my neighbors daughter to play with. In the past I purchased other brands of Easter chalk and the colors were nice, but not as bright as the Crayola Sidewalk Chalk Eggs & Chicks. As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, these were on sale at Wal-Mart for 2 for $3.00 so they are inexpensive yet extremely entertaining for both boys and girls to play with. Ill admit it, I ran outside and gave these a try and they were a total blast to color with. It does take a little bit of time to get used to holding an oval piece of chalk but once you get over the initial weirdness, its pure fun.
These are supposed to be solid pieces of chalk but two of them had small holes inside them. Im not sure if this was due to them being molded incorrectly or possibly an air bubble. I sent an email to Crayola asking them if this was to be expected and Ill update this review with their reply.
Even though my boys dont really believe in the Easter Bunny anymore I still make them each a basket. Since they really like the Crayola Sidewalk Chalk Eggs & Chicks Im planning on picking up more of these while they are still on sale. For parents that dont like to give out a ton of candy for Easter, this is a great and inexpensive way to fill up the basket with something that can be used over and over again. Personally, I consider this to be a unisex gift since there is a lot of variety in the colors and lets face it everyone loves to draw on the sidewalk!
