The original set of Crayola Twistables Crayons that I purchased was such a hit that I returned to the store that afternoon for three more sets. Although these cost more than traditional Crayola Crayons, the attributes make them worth the expenditure in some situations. First of all, I justify the price due to the uniqueness of the product. When art supplies evoke creative endeavors, I smile, and such holds true with regard to Crayola Twistables Crayons. Simply put, my two girls thought they were Kewl, and clearly one set wasnt going to suffice.
Secondly, I care for a small child that removes the paper from traditional crayons no matter how much reasoning you attempt. Next she scratches the sides of the crayon, getting build-up of color underneath her fingernails. I certainly dont want to discourage her, so I felt a set of Crayola Twistables Crayons might offer detraction from crayon destruction, and allow her to focus on art creations. Armed with her own set of Crayola Twistables Crayons, she now completely colors a picture, and she draws more detail on her own. This was a breath of fresh air for me, and certainly made the purchase worthwhile.
Thus far, all children that have colored with the Crayola Twistables Crayons, adore them. These crayons have a clear plastic housing, containing the crayon within. On the top of the color unit, there is a twistable barrel. When you turn this barrel, the color is extended out of the bottom of the color unit, in a manner similar to a mechanical pencil yet with a twist versus a click. This process is easy. Each color stick is approximately 6 ½ in length (the entire crayon is approx. 7"). To date, none of the Crayola Twistables Crayons have broke, and the length of use is spectacular. The outside shaft is clear plastic, colored to match the crayon.
If you have read my review about Crayola 96 Count Crayons, than you likely realize the adoration that the girlies and I maintain for Crayola Crayons. Although the traditional Crayola Crayons remain my favorite color crayon fix, I certainly appreciate Crayola Twistables Crayons, and I am pleased that they are introducing additional colors, including the Crayola Rainbow Twistables Crayons.

The Eight Crayola Twistables Crayons are fun to write with, draw pictures with, and/or color pictures with. This set is Award Winning, The National Association for Gifted Children Holiday Education Toy List 2002, and Parenting for High Potential Magazine 2002 Holiday Toy List. In addtion, requests for the Crayola Twistables Crayons are appearing on some elementary school supply lists. Although I dont feel these sets are an economical option for large class use, time could prove me wrong, due to the longevity factor of the Twistables. After all, we all know that crayons break if stepped on, and the need to peel the paper can become a litter nuisance.
To date, the only possible fault of these crayons is that the end is broad, and not one that can be sharpened. Considering that traditional crayons maintain a fine tip for such a small portion of time, this hasnt created a challenge. However, if your child frequently sharpens his/her crayons, the Crayola Twistables Crayons might not appeal to them.
Overall, we are very pleased with the Crayola Twistables Crayons and I highly recommend the purchase. The purchase price has varied from 1.99 2.84 per set. We tried a less expensive option, the RoseArt Twist Up Crayons, but were displeased. The color consistency was poor, breakage occurred, and the product was inferior to the Crayola Twistables Crayons.
One of my friends works with children that have sensory issues, she mentioned that the Crayola Twistables Crayons are well received by these students. She stated that the children experience less breakage, and tend to like the smooth barrel, versus the texture of paper covered Crayolas. The set of eight Crayola Traditional Color Twistables Crayons arrives in a durable vinyl pouch, that contains a cardboard insert. This is perfect for storing, and allows clear visibility of the color units. These crayons are non-toxic and conform to ASTM D-4236. Crayola Twistables Crayons are recommended for children ages 4 and up. It is safe to conclude that most children and even some adults will enjoy receiving this set. We often put together art packages for gift giving and have included these sets in some; the gift recipients adore them.
