Preamble
One day, my son came running into the house, out of breath, like he had been chased by some wild animal. Mom! I gotta have some crazy bones!
Now I consider myself a pretty hip mom. I know lots of the names of the Pokemon and Digimon characters. I can sing the Sponge Bob Square Pants theme song. What the heck were crazy bones????
Alright, I'm about to tell you. And please, someone tell me if they've heard of these critters before!
What Are Crazy Bones
The official word from the seven year old - Ethan says: Crazy bones are the best and have great colors. They have holes in them that you can blow. The gold ones are really popular. And I wish I had Eggy because he's really rare. The glow in the dark are really cool because they glow in the dark. The sparkle ones are pretty but not like girl pretty.
Mom says: Crazy Bones are colorful pieces of hard plastic that kids can collect and trade. They're about an inch in height and have faces that range from funny looking to scary looking. There are currently over 400 Crazy Bones characters arranged by series: Go-Gos, Things, Sports, Aliens, Mutants, and Buddies. The Go-Gos series has officially been "retired" (which means that they are no longer being manufactured). There are two special series, featuring your favorite Toy Story and Dragonball Z characters.
Ethan has crazy bones from the Go-Gos, Things, Sports, Alients, Mutants, and Buddies collections although please do not think that he has all of them!
What makes each of the characters "special" is that some come in unusual colors and styles.
Toothpaste - Swirls of colors mixed with streams of pearly white streaks.
Glowies - Glow in the dark Crazy Bones are specially designed to illuminate in the dark. Rare findings if you discover one in your pack.
Ice Bones (Crystal and Colored) - Transparent in appearance
Jellies - Clear and softly colored.
Sparkles - Speckled with silver and gold dust throughout.
Precious Metals (Gold) - Gold Crazy Bones are extremely rare. They are shiny in appearance.
Ethan has a mixture of most of these except that he has 2 gold ones.
What Do You Do With These Things?
You play different games with them silly! There are many games but I'm only going to tell you about a couple of Ethan's favorites.
The Traditional Game - Each player takes turns throwing crazy bones in the air at the same time. Your score depends on how your Crazy Bones land.
5 points if it lands standing up.
2 points if it lands on its side.
1 point if it lands face up.
0 points if it lands face down.
It's pretty important that you play on a flat, solid surface or you'll never get your crazy bones to land standing up.
Battle - Two players line up separate rows of six or seven Crazy Bones in rows about six feet away from each other. Next each player takes turns flicking their crazy bones with their fingers to try to knock down the other person's line of crazy bones. The winner is the first person to knock down all their other guy's crazy bones while they still have at least one standing.
Note: this one is tough on the fingernails. Moms, if you're going to play this with your kids, be prepared!
Price and Durability
For some reason, epinions lists a pack of Go-Gos crazy bones for $4.99 a packet. Um, not in my lifetime! :). We purchased foil packs online for $1.99. Each foilpack contains 4 random crazy bones (from whatever collection you select) and stickers. That's a pretty good price.
And let's talk about durability. As much throwing as these crazy bones go through, they stay in one piece and look just as new as the day we bought them. Surprising because Ethan usually can break anything that's made out of plastic :).
Accessories
So you're thinking, $1.99 for a pack of crazy bones isn't that bad. I agree. The accessories though, will get you every time.
Ethan needed to be able to carry his crazy bones in something so we ordered coffins. Yep, you heard me right, coffins. They come in different colors. Some even glow in the dark. You can latch it on to your belt clip and travel around the neighborhood hands free.
There are also collector cases, drawstring pouch bags, bone cages, and mini lunch tins.
And if you're at all familiar with the Pokemon stuff then it won't surprise you that crazy bones has their own battle zone game pad.
The End
If you have a child who likes things like Pokemon, Digimon or Metabots, s/he might be interested in crazy bones. Buy a four pack and see what their reaction is!
