Pros:Lightweight, Motivational, Fun

Cons:No Volume Control, Limited to Three-Letter-Words

The Bottom Line: Children benefit from the phonetic learning opportunities Create-a-Word Traveler™ offers.

With LeapFrog® Froggy Face phonics… We’ll Create-A-Word ™ !

Pardon my open confession, but – alas – when it comes to LeapFrog® Products, I have been hopelessly intrigued since 1995. The Create-a-Word Traveler™ can be credited for contributing to an early addiction that moved forth to include numerous other Leap Frog® products! The Phonics Desk™, Twist & Shout™ Multiplication, and Twist & Shout™ Addition continued the adoration, and the LeapPad® sprung my fondness off the charts.

As a mom of two, daycare/preschool provider for many, and public school volunteer, I have witnessed the incredible interest that children of all learning styles partake toward LeapFrog® products. Most impressionable is the fact that initial interest is passed by with a long-standing adoration for the learning toys. Add in the durability truth, and it becomes even easier to understand why I highly recommend these fun-filled learning adventures!

“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”

Come Here Froggy Face!
Children benefit from the phonetic learning opportunities Create-a-Word Traveler™ offers. Letter recognition and annunciation are important elements for reading success, and this product offers good inspiration in that arena. The ability to spell simplistic three-letter-words offers wonderful first step success on the road to spelling mastery. If you are looking for a lightweight - phonic, alphabet, simplistic-word-family instructional platform…. The Create-a-Word Traveler™ is a great consideration.

This interactive, electronic, alphabet board presents itself in the adorable shape of a frog’s head. The main color is vibrant green and the Create-a-Word Traveler™ platform is accented with purple, orange, and white. The alphabet is presented in raised, white letters, with the vowels highlighted by an orange star background. The round speaker is orange, as is the round, select mode dial. Both of these round orange items depict the frog’s eyes. The handle cut out resembles the frog’s mouth. The shape alone is one that brings a smile to some children. One of my daycare children actually proclaims, “Come here froggy face, we’re going to spell!”

Measuring only 10 ½” x 9 ½” the Create-a-Word Traveler™ provides perfect on-the-go activity! It is light and easy to tote. There are no additional cartridges to worry about, as the board features are inclusive. A beneficial attribute for those times you don’t want to worry about ‘extra items’ or when you have limited space. The recording quality is good and the words are pronounced clear and understandable.

One of the great aspects of this electronic board is that it fosters an “I can spell” process. When children succeed with spelling they are encouraged to write; and when they recognize words, they are inspired to read. Although beneficial to all, this playful frog is especially beneficial to children who like independent work and word games.

Although in use more than not, our frogs resting “pad” is on a shelf in our language arts section of the playroom. It has accompanied us on many car trips and to numerous doctor visits. At this point of time the
Create-a-Word Traveler™ receives more use from the preschool crowd than from my daughters, but they recorded their fair share of time on the little guy.

Whatcha Do?
There are a total of six activities available.

In the middle top, you find an orange ‘on’ button. When pushing this button you hear…
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”

1) When the orange dial is on the ‘a’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Push a letter to hear its name.”
“Try pushing a letter…”

~ Children will gain alphabet recognition by hearing the letter names.

2) When the orange dial is on the ‘a?’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Find the letter to ____.”

If not answered in approx. 10 seconds:
“Push the letter ____.”
If not answered in 5 more seconds:
“Where is that letter ____, keep looking.”
When child presses the requested letter, they hear:
“____ Awesome!”
If selection is wrong they hear a variety of phrases such as:
“u-gah, ah ha ha, ooooo, pdmmm…”
~ Children will gain alphabet recognition by finding and hearing the letter names.

3) When the orange dial is on the ‘a/ ah’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Push a letter to hear its sound.”

If not selected in approx. 5 seconds:
“Try pushing a letter.”
When your child pushes a letter they hear:
“____ says ____.”
~ Simple phonics knowledge by pressing the letters and hearing the letter name and sound.

4) When the orange dial is on the ‘a/ ah?’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Find the letter that says ____ as in _____.”

When depressing the proper letter your child hears an encouraging reply.
~ Simple phonics knowledge by finding the requested letters and hearing the letter name and sound.

5) When the orange dial is on the ‘cat’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Make the word ___ by pushing the letters _ _ _.”

~ On this setting children are taught to spell sixty – 3-letter – words.

6) When the orange dial is on the ‘? ? ?’ selection:
“Ribbit Ribbit, Let’s Play!”
“Push three letters to make your own word.”

~ In the ‘? ? ?’ mode the Create-a-Word Traveler™ can be used to learn and create up to 450, three-letter words.
Exploration is encouraged as your child seeks to create more three-letter words. This educational unit will pronounce any three-letter combination, but your child will benefit from hearing the ‘actual’ words created.

We also utilized the create-a-word mode to encourage rhyming. For example: your child knows how to spell cat. You then encourage him/her to spell additional ‘at’ family words: rat, bat, fat, sat, mat ….. By engaging in this game they strengthen understanding of words that rhyme. Children find this activity fun.

One element of frustration for Marisa was being limited to 3-letter words. She wanted frog face to say her name, which is not possible. Another drawback is that there is not a volume control. While okay for my youngest child, this may be an annoyance to some.

Beneficial for all, really good for …..
When learning to read, one can never have too many avenues of encouragement. We purchased this easy to carry electronic frog face as an additional method of letter sound introduction. Our daughter enjoyed using the Create-a-Word Traveler™ during the phase of ‘alphabet / phonic mastery’ and continued to enjoy it for simplistic three-letter-word support. Once she accomplished phonic mastery her interest in the Create-a-Word Traveler™ decreased to an occasional froggy face adventure. Initially her attention was maintained for spells of approximately 5 to 20 minutes.

As I mentioned, I operate an in-home daycare/preschool. The Create-a-Word Traveler™ is a favorite among the toddler / preschool crowd. This educational toy has withstood many hours of play. Because it is lightweight the children enjoy taking it to a quiet place and embarking on ‘sound it’ fun. The daycare/preschool children use this toy daily and it has held up well. I don’t recommend purposefully dropping it. However, it has remained operable after a minimum of three hard falls. This continues to be one of my favorite toys for independent phonic learning. Also, the battery longevity is superb – the initial batteries were included and lasted for three years.

The Create-a-Word Traveler™ has helped many children during the critical pre-reading stage!
