| need4speed_75's Full Review: Creative Technology Nomad Jukebox (20 GB) MP3 Play... |
When I first heard about mp3 players, I fell in love with the idea of thousands of songs without the hassle of CD's. I received an mp3 player for Christmas, and it was an Archos Jukebox. I fiddled with the software for probably about 5 hours and couldn't figure out why Musicmatch Jukebox, the software that comes with it wouldn't recognize the player. I finally figured out that somehow the software didn't seem to support the player (weird). So I returned it and got the Nomad Jukebox 3, which was the one that I wanted in the first place. Being a newbie to mp3 players, i didn't really know what to expect, but i was amazed at the product.
SOUND
The sound of this thing is great--better than i expected. It seems just like CD quality to me. Of course i'm not really that picky, but I think most people would be more than satisfied with the sound quality (especially with a good set of studio monitor style headphones).
STORAGE
The Nomad Jukebox 3 comes with either a 20GB or 40GB hard drive--that's either 5000 or 10000 mp3 files, roughly. If you're a serious music lover who wants tons of storage, this is it.
FEATURES
The Nomad Jukebox 3 comes with quite a few features, including 2 line out ports for playing music on speakers, EAX effects including time-scaling (in which you can slow down or speed up the music without distortion), simulated environments like indoor arena and bathroom, different equalizer settings, and a custom equalizer. It supports USB or firewire connection. It comes with Creative Playcenter 2 software, which doesn't seem like that great of a program, but is fairly easy to use and works good with the Nomad Jukebox 3. Some people might criticize Creative Labs for bothering to put a whole bunch of bells and whistles on an already great product, but the advanced features are useful at times, and can spice up the same old songs you've listened to over and over again. The Jukebox comes with a rechargeable battery that gives, from what i've found, about 8 or 9 hours of battery life, and can be recharged in 3 to 4 hours. What I like is that you can still use the player while the battery is charging.
PORTABILITY
The Nomad Jukebox 3 is a little bulky to carry around. It's about the size of the average CD player, but that isn't really to big. I think the moderate size and weight shouldn't be too much for most people to handle. I think the size is worth the quality and storage.
EASE OF USE
I found the Nomad Jukebox 3 surprisingly easy to use. The scroll wheel is a big help in scrolling through long playlists. There is also a search tool that allows you to search for a specific song quickly instead of taking the time to scroll through a long list of songs. Everything is pretty cut and clear, which is nice because there's no manual for how to actually use the player. Really, the only bad thing is that since the player is rather big, it's fairly hard to operate with one hand. The file transferring seems to be pretty flawless, though I did experience some freezing of my computer when I connected the player to my computer before I opened the Creative Play Center 2 program, but that might just be my computer. I've only had one hangup with the player itself so far. I just used a paperclip to press the reset button and it was fine.
SUMMARY
The Nomad Jukebox 3, overall, is a great product at I think a great price--only about $250 for the 20GB model. With great sound, tons of storage, lots of features, and a great price, the Nomad Jukebox 3 should satisfy almost any music lover.
