| ashaman's Full Review: Creative Technology Nomad Jukebox (10 GB) MP3 Play... |
This is the third MP3 player I have owned, and the second jukebox. I have to say that overall I am really happy with this player. You get a lot of features, and the price is reasonable. Sound quality is fantastic, although it could be a tad louder for my tastes. I am writing this review after one year of ownership, so I have had plenty of time to discover its "highs" as well as its "lows."
I really like the interface, they did a great job with that! Organize searches by Artist, Title, Genre, or Playlist. Within any of those options you can choose shuffle play to provide you with your own personal radio station :) Finding the music you want quickly is a breeze once you have set it up.
The USB 2.0 interface simply rocks. Some older/entry level players are equipped with a USB 1 interface, which has a maximum transfer rate of 12 Mb/s. Loading up large music libraries can take FOREVER at this speed. However, the Jukebox 2 is equipped with USB 2.0, which by comparison has a blazing 480Mb/s transfer rate! It makes me smile every time I send a new album to the player, the progress bar simply zips right by!
The battery life is really good also. I owned a Nomad Jukebox I prior, and was always dissapointed with battery life. I was delighted with this model however, as it has drastically improved. It will generally play somewhere in the area of 6 hours before it needs to be recharged.
Weight is pretty low for this player, much lighter than I expected it to be. Having said that though, it is also somewhat large. Much larger than say, an Ipod...but it is smaller than a Discman style CD player.
These are the positives, I do however have some negatives:
1. The display is too small, and it is difficult to read at times. I don't know why they chose to reduce it from the Jukebox 1, but it is noticeably smaller. This makes the wonderful interface they have designed seem much more crowded.
2. I don't care for the shuttle/jog control. It is good in theory, but in application it tends to be a balky/finicky control interface I have to play with to set as I want.
3. For some strange reason or other, when the battery is low I will get thrown into this "perpetual reboot" routine. I don't know what causes this, but it is VERY irritating, especially when it happens in the car. The only way to make it stop is to remove the battery, put it back in, reboot/restart the player. It seems like it always comes up when the batter life is >50%.
In summary however, I am really happy with the player. The latest version of the software is great, IMO and a vast improvement over the original. The "audiosync" feature lets you easily keep your libraries updated on both PC & player should you so choose; very nice. The Jukebox 2 offers some nice improvements over the original, and is a great player for the price.
