| gav6791's Full Review: Creative Technology Inspire Slim 2600 2 Speakers |
I paid fifty dollars for these speakers at Circuit City. I like the quality of most Creative products and so I decided to give these speakers a try. Thus far I am quite pleased with them. For one thing, they are wall mountable, only about 2 1/2 inches deep, which gives them a leg up on some similar products that aren't.The subwoofer is only about 7 inches high and just barely fits under my desk.
I can be very particular when it comes to audio quality. Basically I would say these speakers give very good sound straight out of the soundcard, and when using a program like Windows Media Player that allows you to adjust your graphic equalizer, I would say they sound excellent. Let me add that I also have the Plus! pack for Windows XP, which gives custom eq settings for different speakers. These speakers are not yet listed in their database, but I am using the settings for Harmon Kardon HK 595s with good results. With all this tweaking I get results that rival a home stereo, which is more than I expected for the price I paid.
I mentioned they have boomy bass. What I mean in the bass response is not entirely flat, as you might expect with a small subwoofer, it is exaggerated in the upper bass range, and this is more true as you increase the subwoofer volume. For this reason I have adjusted it to the lowest possible volume while still getting some satisfaction from it. But as I said, the overall quality is still very good.
Some other reviewers said these speakers have "excellent bass". I can only assume they don't know good tight bass from mud, or they are mostly using the speakers for playing games. These speakers have adequate bass if set up correctly, but if bass is what you're really after I would think your money would be better spent in a system with a larger subwoofer and bigger price tag.
The speakers on the satellites seem to be of good quality as the box suggested, not the paper thin drivers that may get damaged at high volumes in many systems. Let me mention that Creative is also currently offering free red or blue speaker grilles, normally $19.99, if you buy these online at their website.
The desk remote is quite handy, I no longer have to click the taskbar all the time. It has a power indicator and a large wheel to adjust the volume or to turn the speakers on or off.
Aesthetically speaking this package is quite pleasing, and seems to have been made with good attention to detail. They have an overall quality look to them.
As far as the low power rating, 6 x 6 x 19, they seem to be able to get loud enough for most uses. (For reference, home audio amplifiers like to send at least 80 watts to each channel to render accurate bass.)
Overall, a very nice 2.1 package for the price, and would make most computer users very satisfied.
