Pros: GOOD GERMINATION, SELF SEEDING, LONG LASTING, PERENNIAL
Cons: NONE NOTED
Renee's Gardens' Creeping Thyme, Thymus Pulegioides, is a full sun perennial, sprawling herb hardy to zones 4 - 8,,standing about 7 inches in height and spread about 20 inches; this particular cultivar is nice for tucking into small spaces.
Water needs are medium to dry, low maintenance, best in full sun, blossom time July.
Easily cultivated in average, poor to modest fertility, dry to somewhat well-drained soils in full sun; Creeping Thyme does best in loose, sandy or rocky soils having outstanding drainage. Thyme has an aversion to moist or wet soils where it tends to rot. My California Thyme was successful in soil in a raised bed area; here in Oklahoma Thyme presents a bit more problem in this clay soil, however, amending with sand, organic matter and the like has helped.
Broadcast of seed is not recommended, rather, using peat pellets and grow through peat pots I sprinkled seed onto the moistened pellets, kept them warm and moist and later transplanted into the prepared transplant bed. Germination was quick in 70+° F weather. I set out my transplants when day time temperatures were pretty constant at 70° F and nighttime temps were consistently above 55° F. Using grow through pots allows little transplant shock as cultivar, pot and all are set into excavations gouged in the planting area.
An energetic, scented, flowering Thyme variety spreading quickly in sunny garden areas, forms a low, thick mat sprawling haphazardly to offer an inimitable vista of heavenly fragrance as well as blossoms and lovely deep bottle green foliage for much of the year.
Work the area to be serve as the transplant bed with shovel, amend as needed to provide the drainage required. I like raised beds in this clay muck, raised beds filled with growing mix, compost, a good layer of sand and pebbles at the base all serve offer the drainage needed. Adding some distinctive rocks to the raised bed and then transplanting creeping thyme into the bed has worked well for me.
Creeping Thyme is a long lived perennial adding interest and beauty just about anywhere it is placed. Because Thyme is a long-lasting perennial and is hardy almost everywhere in the nation I know that now that the first bed is finished it will remain pretty much as is, creeping onward, blooming and scenting the area with minty to lemon perfume depending upon the particular cultivar used.
In my desire to change the broad expanse of water guzzling grass that entails a lot of care, mowing, raking and the like, I have turned to groundcovers and planting pockets and walk ways as much as possible. Any bare spot in the yard could serve as a candidate for this quick and permanent cover. Self sowing, Thyme is all but care free once it is established.
Bambi does not care for the Thyme I have added to the yard.
Creeping Thyme located at edges of walkway borders, in rock gardens, and in the raised planting bed has allowed this cultivar to stretch, spill over and add a nice rustic touch of beauty that needs little in the way of care, water, mowing or attention, other than watching the butterflies and bees as they buzz by.
I use a good bit of stone alone the edges of planting beds and pockets, Creeping Thyme set between my Lilies or Iris has proven
Happy to recommend Renee's Gardens' Creeping Thyme.
