Want a yummy sugar-free hard candy? Give these a try.
Written: Nov 06 '07
Pros:A low calorie treat with a nice flavor.
Cons:Each candy is quite small, and doesn't last too long.
The Bottom Line: Not a bad choice, for a sugar-free hard candy.
Occasionally I like to indulge in a hard candy. Especially if my throat is feeling a little bit dry. I enjoy Creme Savers because they offer delicious flavor combinations in a sugar-free candy. The one I'm eating now is called Strawberries & Creme. (That's not a typo, that's really how they spell it).
What are they?
These are small round hard candies. They're fairly thin, with only a 3/4" diameter. Because this flavor is Strawberries & Creme, the color scheme for this candy is red and white. With swirled bands of both colors, it looks similar to those red and white mints that you get in restaurants.
The 2.75 oz. bag contains 25 individually wrapped candies.
How does it taste?
Very nice. With a very sweet flavor that does taste a little bit fruity. I'm not sure that I would really identify the taste as "strawberry" if I didn't know what it was, but it does taste good. It's quite a bit sweeter than a plain strawberry-flavored sucking candy would be. And as it dissolves, there is a faint taste of cream - similar to how the white part of a Creamsicle tastes. (Well, let me rephrase - it's similar to how the white part of the sugar-free Creamsicle that I eat tastes. I don't really know how a "real" Creamsicle tastes.) I don't notice any particular after-taste, commonly associated with sugar-free products.
What makes it so sweet?
The ingredients list Isomalt, and Acesulfame Potassium. As with any product containing artificial sweeteners, some people will experience gastric distress. If you're unsure how your system will react to these products, start out with very small doses.
I find each candy lasts about six minutes before it's nothing more than a very thin sliver that I end up chewing. They consider five pieces to be a serving. Each serving contains 45 calories, 1.5g of fat, 35mg of sodium, and, of course, 0g of sugar (but 13g of sugar alcohol). Regular Creme Savers contain 70 calories and 1g of fat.
Creme Savers is part of the Wrigley brand of products. For more information see www.wrigley.com If you enjoy hard candies, but don't want (or can't have) any sugar, you might want to give these a try.
