My dentist recommended that I pay $160 for a 3 week bleaching treatment through him, not covered by insurance. Before I tried that, we saw these Crest Premium Whitestrips at Costco ($50 for a 2-pack) and thought we'd give it a try. I just finished my week, and my teeth are noticeably whiter.
You wear the strips on your teeth 30 minutes twice a day for 7 days . I wore mine during my 1/2 hour commute to and from work. The package says you can talk while you use them, but I wouldn't recommend that. They made me talk with a slight lisp. You can't eat or drink either. The gel is a little goopy if it starts to slide around on your teeth, but if you don't fuss with them too much, it will stay put. Also, you will get a bit on your fingers as you apply it. Make sure you wash this off with soap and water as directed. If you don't it will start to make your skin tingle. I'm sure it does not permanent damage, but it was a little annoying.
I saw results after about 4 days. I had a dark streaky stain on one of my front teeth that is almost gone. It's a very light beige smudge instead of a dark tan stain. I did notice a little sensitivity to cold water about day 4 or 5, and on my very last treatment, it actually was a bit painful to have the strips on my teeth. I think it's a matter of individual sensitivity though. I still consider it worth it to have a brighter smile for only $25 and no hassling with extra trips to the dentist.
