Shecket's Full Review: Robert Eastaway - Cricket Explained
My curiosity in Cricket was piqued while listening to BBC World Service. (What did all those numbers mean?) Instantly, I reserved Cricket Explained from the library. After reading this book, I was hooked. I've followed test matches and one day internationals on Cricinfo. I've bought cricket related books and software.
The book starts out by explaining basic elements of bat and ball sports. Those who are familiar with baseball or rounders will breeze through the first few pages.
Within the book are two very handy diagrams.
The first is a map of all the typical fielding positions, from "Silly Mid Off" to the "agriculturals".
The second has pictures of all the umpire's hand signals, (although "4" is made to look a bit more elaborate than it actually is).
Some people might pick up this book having already seen some cricket may learn a few things as well. The book explains the use of sightscreens, and why a fast bowler might rub the ball on his trousers.
I hope everybody picks up this book and becomes interested in helping me put together an American test squad.
