bigtruckseries's Full Review: Crosman Tac 77 Elite Break Barrel Air Gun Rifle Ki...
Chances are, if you’ve been to the gun department in Dick’sSporting Goods, or walmart, you’re attention may have been drawn to the Crosman Tac 77 because of its beefy, sexy stock and intimidating looks. In fact, it looks so good, its hard to believe at first glance that it isn’t a real rifle.
The Crosman Tac77 is a perfect example why I love Crosman airguns more than Daisy’s. Though they both make their light rifles out of plastic Crosman tends to put out better designs with a higher quality feel. This gun’s typical price is between $175 - $200, but it more than makes up for that with its attractive looks and its included accessories.
You get, one rifle, a rifle bag large enough to accommodate its accessories, a zoom scope and a tactical flashlight. You can also buy the gun with an included bipod which lets you rest it easier on a windowsill or a fence.
The synthetic stock looks modern and makes the gun easier to handle. With a weight of just 6 pounds and a length of 43 inches, its easy to carry and easy to stash in the car for camping trips.
CALIBER and POWER
To fire the gun, you simply open the breach by cocking it, load a single pellet, close the breech, uncock the safety and you're ready to rock. cocking effort is around 28lbs so this is really an adult-only gun...especially considering the power. fortunately the rifle has a nifty widened muzzle brake which makes for a great cocking lever.
The Crosman Tac77 is sold in two popular calibers: .22(Extreme) and .177(Elite). the only change made is to the barrel so you are still dealing with the same air pressure. The .22 because of the larger/heavier pellet averages out to about 800 Feet Per Second. while the lighter .177 pellet races from the barrel at 1000 FPS. 700 FPS is about the entry point for a good small game hunting air rifle in the .177 caliber and most manufactures don’t make spring rifles more powerful than 1000FPS because the materials required are more expensive and because at a certain velocity, the pellets become aerodynamically unstable. The speed of sound at sea level is around 1075FPS and once a pellet breaks the sound barrier, not only does it create a sonic shockwave like a real gun, but the pellet begins to tumble. In a hunting rifle at medium ranges, this can cause devastating entry wounds which is advantageous for hunting rats or squirrel, but for paper target practice this can throw off accuracy measurements.
Though GAMO offers the ridiculously powerful 1250FPS (and higher) HUNTER series, you need to use their pellets to get the best results with it.
The Tac77 in the .177 caliber is the rifle I choose for small game hunting…it even outperforms my aging Winchester 800. http://www.epinions.com/review/Winchester_800X_Air_Rifle_Combo/content_489960541828 Tac 77 will easily take down soft targets like rodents, but will also take down more distant perched targets such as crows or hard targets like Squirrels or Possums. It tears clean, neat holes in the wooden or PVC slats of fences, so care should be taken to create a good backstop, or to ensure no one is in the background behind vegetation.
The .22 model (Extreme) offers more downrange energy delivery due to its larger size despite its lower velocity. However, when hunting, a killshot is a killshot and accuracy is more important than overall delivered energy. Use the Tac 77 with pointed hunting pellets or hollowpoints and you’ll score a kill each shot.
ACCURACY
You most likely, won’t want to use the guns built in sight’s because it comes out of the box with an attached scope, laser and a tactical flashlight.
I found the 3-9X32 Zoom scope to be fantastic and I tended to use it at highest zoom on distant targets over 40 yards away. The flashlight however I completely disconnected because I never shoot in the dark. It does serve a purpose however…its for people who want to put holes in animals that are rummaging through their garbage cans at 3 AM in the morning.
The laser beam isn’t really necessary in my opinion but, people who shoot large target such as cans might like it. The scope is enough for me. Of course, you’ll need to buy batteries to replace these when they run out.
This gun is highly accurate and highly precise thanks to the inherent characteristics of well built spring piston rifles. The Tac 77 was much more a joy to shoot than my Winchester 800.
OVERALL
Great looks; quality, thin illuminated crosshairs in the scope and a professional feeling stock make the Tac 77 a solid performer and extremely fun to shoot. These spring guns may be a bit jumpy due to the violent pop of the spring but their major benefit is low cost shooting since a single cock gives you all the energy you need to put a pest down for good.
Rigged with a number of tactical features, this accurate breakbarrel rifle will shoot .177cal. pellets at 1,000 fps. The synthetic stock has soft grip...More at Cabela's
