| laura10801's Full Review: Crystal Light Lemonade Mix Makes 32 Qts |
I love lemonade, but I don't like a lot of hassle and I don't like a lot of sugar. I bought Crystal Light Lemonade on an impulse, when I saw it on sale at my local supermarket. I think I paid around 6 dollars for a canister that contained enough to make 16 - 2 quart pitchers.
Crystal Light Lemonade is very easy to make. You simply empty a little, pre-measured tub into a pitcher and add 2 quarts of cold water, mix, and either refrigerate or serve it over ice. Do not serve it luke warm, it is nasty that way. I would suggest taking the trouble of measuring your water. 8 cups = 2 quarts.
The canister has a removable top, which can easily re-seal the canister. Each tub is sealed and I think it would be very difficult to tamper with a tub without it being noticed.
I am not particularly proud to be drinking this stuff. It has 5 calories per 8 ounce serving, and although it is suger-free, it is not what anyone would call a "health food." Here are the ingredients: Citric Acid (provides tartness), Potassium Citrate (controls acidity), Maltodextrin (from corn), Aspartame* (sweetener), Magnesium Oxide (prevents caking), contains less than 2% of Natural Flavor, Lemon Juice Solids, Acesulfame Potassium (sweetener), Artificial Color, Yellow 5 Lake, BHA (preserves freshness)
*Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine
Now, I may be mistaken here, but Maltodextrin sounds an awful lot like corn syrup to me. Aspartame (also known as Nutrasweet and Equal) is an artificial sweetener, which I actually try to avoid because there has been discussion that when it is heated for extended periods it turns into something toxic. I kid myself that that doesn't matter because this is COLD lemonade, but it bothers me. I'd like it better if it was made with splenda which has not yet found to be toxic (although I'm sure it will turn up toxic eventually). It also contains almost no natural flavors.
Crystal Light Lemonade does not look at all natural to me. The color is an almost unreal yellow, almost day-glo like. This is a turn off, but not enough of one to make me not drink it.
With all this said, Crystal Light Lemonade is very tasty to me. It has a nice balance between acidic flavor and sweetness. I only drink it ice cold, and on a hot, humid summer day, it goes down soooo nicely! Earlier today some workers delivered some heavy stuff. We are having a heatwave, so I offered them some Crystal Light Lemonade. One of the workers took a sip and said "Bless you." I've never been blessed for lemonade before. I guess he liked it.
I think that by writing this review I may have convinced myself not to drink this stuff anymore. It really sounds kind of nasty when I objectively examine what I am drinking. Well, maybe I'll just finish this batch.
