Light Lemon and Tart Lime Combine in a (mostly) Natural Drink Mix

Pros:light, mildly tart and lightly sweet flavor; no artificial sweeteners; usage of Stevia

Cons:Expensive; usage of oleoresin tumeric, which is questionable to me

The Bottom Line: Very refreshing, especially on a hot day, without artificial sweeteners!

As a Vocalpoint member, I was fortunate to receive a sample pack of Crystal Light's newest collection of drink mixes called Pure Fitness.  Normally I wouldn't have elected to try out drink mixes, because most contain artificial sweeteners, but this one is very different because they sweeten it with cane sugar and something called Stevia, which is a plant.  When I saw that, I was quite happy!  And that happiness extends to today's taste-test of the flavor Lemon Lime.

What it is
As many know already, Crystal Light has a long line of various drink mixes.  This newest line of Pure Fitness is quite different in of the fact that it is devoid of artificial sweeteners, colors, flavor, and preservatives.  The drink mixes come in individual packets containing 0.31 ounces (9g) of powder.  To mix it up, you simply pour the powder into a 16.9 ounce water bottle (after you've taken a sip of the water) or in a cup full of 16 ounces of water.  I chose the latter, seeing as I was at home and it made no sense to use a bottle.  The Lemon Lime drink mix powder (light yellow) dissolves fully and quickly, leaving behind nothing but a smooth beverage (light yellow color).  I did not detect any grittiness at any time while drinking it, and no reside at the bottom of my cup.

Flavor
It is an exceptionally hot day today, with temperatures at or above 100.  I figured it was a good day to try my Lemon Lime flavor, since that sounded like a refreshing choice after coming home from grocery shopping.  Sure enough, I am correct!  It is a light lemon lime flavor that is ever so slightly tart and tastes so good on this hot, hot day.  I could easily down the entire cup, though I'd rather savor the flavor.  It is sweet without being sickeningly sweet.  To me, this flavor is the lightest flavored/sweetness of the three currently offered flavors from the Pure Fitness line (other two being Grape and Strawberry Kiwi).

Ingredients
evaporated cane juice, citric acid, calcium lactate, contains less than 2% of natural flavor, Rebiana (a natural sweetener), potassium citrate, magnesium oxide, sodium citrate, salt, oleoresin tumeric (for color)

I'd not seen Rebiana before, but what I found out about it seemed positive.  Rebiana is just the name for the product extracted (refined) from specific parts of the Stevia plant, whereas, Stevia itself is mainly the dried leaves.  Rebiana is said to be the sweetest part of the plant.  Some new sweeteners out there that contain Stevia are also mixed with other sweeteners, both natural and artificial, but Rebiana is simply Stevia, from all that I've read thus far.  I'm happy about that.

Oleoresin tumeric was a new one for me, so I looked it up.  I found it difficult to find information that made sense to me, but what I did find was this; oleoresin tumeric is an extract of tumeric which is often used as a coloring agent.  It is the extraction method and chemicals used that I found confusing.  Some sources stated chemicals like acetone, methanol, petroleums, and ethanol are used to extract this coloring from the plant.  It also stated it could contain residual chemicals and solvents like lead, arsenic, and whatever chemical(s) were used in the extraction process.  To me, this doesn't seem quite so natural.  Granted, I doubt much of it was used in the product, but the fact still remains that there are questionable residual chemicals found within it.

Nutritionally speaking, when you consume the entire packet, you'll take in 30 calories, 6g of sugar, and 70mg sodium.  Other than that, not much else.  Just be aware if you look at the nutritional information on the packet, it is stated for 1/2 packet, not the whole packet.

Overall Opinion
The biggest downside I've seen with Crystal Light Pure Fitness is the cost.  You get 7 packets per box, but that will set you back $2.50 to $4.00 which is ridiculous.  Watch for those sales and coupons to get the best deal.  These are good, but not worth that upper regular price!  The convenience of an individual packet is nice, though, because you can just throw a couple in your bag, purse, or whatever.  You just need a bottle of water and you're good to go.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my Lemon Lime Pure Fitness drink mix from Crystal Light.  It tastes so good after being overly hot and seems to be warding off dehydration just fine.  It is mildly tart, which I like, and the sweetness is perfect.  Highly recommended, especially on a hot, sunny day!

If you'd like, you can read my reviews on the other two flavors, too!
