Why in the world would you need to cover your Wii Balance Board with a silicone prophylactic? Well, why wouldn't you? First off this sleeve is very well-designed, in that it provides a soft non-slip surface to an otherwise hard plastic and potentially slippery surface. The silicone sleeve, once installed correctly, is a snug outer shell that has many silicone "nubs" on the surface to help grip a player's shoes or (dare I say) bare feet. It's also quite soft and makes for more enjoyable use over the hard smooth plastic of the Balance Board. If you have more than one Balance Board for multi-player situations, your silicone cover will make it easy to spot your board when it's time to go home.
The underside of the sleeve is pretty ingenious as well. It incorporates flaps with longer "nubs" that slip into the Wii Balance Board's screw wells to enable even more non-slip gripping power. In the seven months that we've had and used the sleeve, my family has never encountered even one issue with the sleeve coming away from the Balance Board. In other words, don't worry about any accidents with respect to the silicone cover. I just wish the Balance Board was designed to be a bit larger for adults with larger feet because I seem to catch an edge a few too many times.
These silicone sleeves are available on Ebay (and other retailers) in a myriad of colors and styles. I would strongly recommend getting one if you've got a balance board for the Wii Gaming System.
With regard to health & safety: I don't believe the silicone cover is impregnated with any sort of anti-germ properties - although that would have been nice. Cleaning is as simple as removing the cover and washing it with mild soap and water. Of course, you'll need to let it dry COMPLETELY before use. In these times of heinous flu strains, I would suggest washing it more often when others (other than your immediate family) come over to play Wii. Limit the amount of times anyone plays bare-footed and do not allow anyone to use sandals. Ask me how I know this.
With regard to accuracy: After using the cover for all this time, we have noticed no difference in the accuracy in the Wii Fit's readings.
If you've got Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus or any Wii game that's compatible with the Balance Board - get one of these silicone covers and thank me later.
