Pros: Sleek, good-looking. Tall enough to open tall cans -- if only it would open them.
Cons: Hit or miss performance -- mostly miss. Looks are quite deceiving, performance below par.
The Bottom Line: Avoid this pretty, yet mostly worthless can opener. It might look good on display, but seldom opens a can on the first try. Or the second. Or the third.
diverpam's Full Review: Cuisinart DCO24 Die Cast Can Opener
I really expected that this cool looking Cuisinart can opener would be a great addition to my recently remodeled kitchen. I ditched the old, black cheapo can opener and opted for the sleek stainless finish of this baby.
She looks good on the cabinet, sleek and sexy, and perfect for my stainless steel appliances. I thought she was quite a bargain on sale for $40. Alas, that was not the case.
I used to struggle with and curse my old electric can opener. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Getting it to catch on the can was the problem.
In comes new Miss Sexy Cuisinart! The first time I went to use her I had a bit of problem in getting the can started. I took me three tries before she finally removed the lid.
Hmmmm, my husband is looking at me sideways and asking why I had to have that can opener. Of course, I had to defend my new purchase. Not a good start.
After that first use, it was hit or miss whether the can would "catch" on the first try. Most of the time it was "miss" ... much like the old cheapo can opener I trashed.
I am sad to report things are only getting worse. I seldom cook, so my can opener has a pretty easy life. Not a lot of use and certainly nothing heavy duty -- green beans and cream of mushroom soup is about the biggest workout a can opener gets in my house.
Last night I was trying to open a can of milk -- after four tries I accomplished nothing but creating a paper shred mess on my counter top. I banged it, I cursed it, I turned it at a different angle, putting full responsibility on myself for lack of performance. Then I realized it was not my fault.
A can opener has but one function -- to open a can. I believe it's implied that it will be done so quickly and efficiently. That is not the case with this Cuisinart mistake.
Little Miss Sleek and Sexy is nothing more than a can tease! There's more to life than just looking good. If you can't deliver the goods, then I don't want you around.
So, back to the old hand-held can opener we use on camping trips.
I don't know if I just got a lemon or if there are a whole bunch of non-performing can openers, but I cannot recommend this to anyone. Unless of course, you NEVER cook and just want something to look good on the counter. (In that case, let me know and I'll make you a deal.)
