When our old ice cream maker finally refused to turn the paddle anymore I went looking for a new machine. We have a lot of allergies in out family so we make homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt pretty regularly. When I ran across this machine I was intrigued because it's big--2 quarts--the machine itself is fairly large, and it works by turning the bowl instead of turning a paddle. It was also considerably more expensive than the usual 1.5 quart machines. But I finally decided to give it a try. I haven't made a better kitchen purchase in a long time. Sure it's a machine you have to leave on the counter unless you are into lugging equipment around your kitchen. But it makes wonderful ice cream. It makes wonderful frozen yogurt. My daughter had just had her tonsils out when we bought it and it made wonderful soft drink freezes--which was just what she needed for her sore throat.
I like the fact that the bowl turns, the paddle is substantial, and you just put the top on without having to fit it in grooves or snap it on. It's easy to add your ice cream (or yogurt, etc.), because the hole in the top is good sized. It mixes fast enough so that I have, on occasion, gotten two rounds of mixture frozen, one after the other. We just keep the bowl in our freezer all the time, so that we can make our ice cream or whatever whenever we think about it. In addition, it takes the same amount of work to make up a mixture for 1.5 quarts as it does 2 quarts. Homemade ice creams go so fast that it just seems silly not to go for the larger machine.
