I picked up this machine a year ago. So far, I have made about 7-8 batches of ice cream. It takes a little while getting used to how it makes ice cream (soft), but by the second or third batch, you will have the hang if it.
The 2 litre (2 quart) size is plenty big enough. I use custard-based recipes (egg and 35% cream), so a little goes a long way. Be sure to have a very sturdy wooden or rigid spatula to help clean out the bowl. Although the paddle scrapes the sides of the bowl, it does leave a 1/4 to 3/8” thick crust of very frozen ice cream on the side of the freezing bowl that can only be removed with some elbow grease.
We keep our freezing bowl in the chest freezer all the time so it is ready to go. Any mix I add is pre chilled so it shortens the freeing time as well as the time it takes to refreeze the bowl. We have an advantage in that our chest freezer is -14 C (about 6F). I'm pretty sure that most fridge freezers don't get that cold so your results may be slower if you can’t get the bowl super cold. If you want to refreeze the bowl right away, wash and dry the bowl quickly, get it back into the freezer and you won’t need the full 24 hours to refreeze.
Like others have said, it is a bit noisy--a little louder than a old style electric can opener, but it's not actually a bad thing. It takes about 20-30 minutes to make ice cream so while you may wander out of the kitchen to do other things, you will never forget that it is running; that and the kids will constantly remind you, “Is it done yet?”
