Cuisinart SS700 Review - Single Serve Brewing System using Keurig K-cups

Pros:looks great, 5 cup sizes, rinse, hot water feature, includes my kcup adapter

Cons:pricey at $200

The Bottom Line: The Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig brews a variety of hot beverages and looks great in your kitchen!

Background
I have been using single serve brewing systems for many years now. I started out with the Senseo Brewing system which I really liked but grew bored with the limited choices of coffee flavors. Last fall I upgraded to the Keurig Platinum brewing system, intrigued by the amazing variety of K-cup flavors available from several coffee manufacturers. I have to say that I loved the Keurig brewing system, but ultimately had a lot of trouble with them breaking down. I think I was on my forth unit ( I lost count) in about 9 months. Keurig has wonderful customer service and sent me new ones but I was every day waiting for the new one to stop working like the others had.

Last week I noticed on the Keurig website this Cuisinart brewing system. It had the same features as my platinum brewer and a few additional ones. What really attracted me was that it had a larger reservoir in basically the same footprint as the keurig platinum. 80oz vs 60oz is a pretty big difference. The other things it offered that I could not get with the keurig platinum was a rinse cycle which essentially runs approx 4oz of hot water through so that if you are switching from coffee to tea or from one flavor to another you can rinse the K-cup holder to get rid of any residual flavors from the previously brewed coffee. The final thing that it offered that was different was a hot water button. I will detail a few other minor differences below.

What is in the box

Besides the brewer the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig comes with the following
* water reservoir that holds 80oz of water and cover.
* water filter system with one charcoal filter (if you use this it needs to be changed about once a month depending on how often you use your brewer.
* a special k-cup adapter that you can fill with your own coffee
* coffee scoop
* removable trip tray (2pieces)
* and last but not least a sampling of 12 different flavored Kcups

How it looks on my kitchen counter

The Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig is truly a lovely addition to my kitchen. It matches my stainless steel appliances and has a blue light on the command buttons the display as well as blue lights illuminating the water tank. The lights are not super bright but add a nice night light feature at night. the Brewer is meant to be left on and ready all the time, although you can turn it off or program it to only be on at certain times of the day.

Basic Specs
    *  UL approved for
      Household use only
    * Power: 1,025 Watts
    * Voltage: 120VAC/60Hz
    * Weight: 8 lb empty; 15.5 lb full
    * Dimensions:
      12 1/8"H x 10 1/4"W x 13 1/2"D

Set up

Setting up the brewer is easy. It only took a few minutes. All you have to do is remove it from the box. There is a lot of tape on the unit which has to be removed. The tape is just to stabilize it for shipping. After you remove all the tape and packaging material, rinse out the reservoir with warm soapy water and then fill with water.

Note: I use filtered water from my fridge so I do not use the enclosed water filter since it essentially does the same thing. If you are going to use the enclosed filter you need to rinse the charcoal filter and then put it in the holder which then fits inside the water reservoir. This filter needs to be changed once a month ...more or less depending on how often you use the brewer.

Plug the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System into a grounded outlet and turn the brewer on with the switch that is conveniently located on the right side. It will start to draw water into the brewer until it has taken in about 36oz of water into the unit. It takes about 4 minutes to heat the water. Until the water is heated the LCD display will say "Not Ready" When heated the display will change to "Lift Head" which means you can lift up and close the head. To start out with you should run a medium sized cup of just water. If you want to rinse the machine more run about 3 of the largest size cups to actually run water completely through the brewer.

Now you are ready to brew!

Brewing
Choose whether you want to use a K-cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa....or your own coffee/tea in the "my Kcup" assembly. If you are using a K cup lift the lid and then close it. This will pierce the top and the bottom of the kcup. The LCD display will give you five choices of sizes 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, or 12oz. The default is 10oz. If you want to switch you can press the up or down arrow to make a smaller or larger cup. Generally the smaller cup size you choose the stronger your coffee or tea. You will have to experiment to find out which size is best for you.

Rinsing
If you want to use the rinse function between brewing, place a cup on the drip tray and after opening and closing the lid press "rinse" approx 4 oz of water will go through the brewer. You could honestly do the same thing by just pressing to brew a 4oz cup, so even though this is a new feature not on the platinum brewer it is not something you could not do using the platinum brewer. Basically you just get a dedicated button for doing so.

Hot water
To use the Hot water feature on the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig open and close the lid and then pick the brew size you want and press hot water. Again, like the rinse feature I am not sure there is a difference between choosing brew and choosing hot water except that there is no Kcup inside and a dedicated hot water button. It is nice to use the hot water feature if you are making hot cocoa from an envelope or any other hot beverage. You will want to rinse first to get clean water.

Using the My Kcup

To use the My Kcup with the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig. Remove the Kcup holder that comes in the unit, fill the My Kcup with coffee or tea and snap on the lid. Put the filled My Kcup into the same spot where you removed the Kcup holder and close the lid and brew normally. I have not actually tried the My Kcup but it is nice to have. It is stored in a special compartment on the side of the brewer. I do not anticipate using it because there are so many choices of coffee. I guess I might try sticking a tea bag in there at some point.

Programming
You can program the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig to remember your favorite cup size. You can also adjust the temperature slightly up or down and have it display time as well as on and off times, or an auto shut off time. You are not required to program anything into it if you don't want a clock and you are happy with the cup size that is set as the default. The programming is self explanitory but there are instructions in the book. Essentially just press "menu" and follow the instructions.

Clean up
When you are done brewing there is no immediate clean up required. Once every 3 months or so the brewer will display de-scale. The Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig has a sensor that can tell you when hard water deposits are building up and then you simply brew straight white vinegar in the machine, let it sit four hours and flush with plain water until you get all the vinegar taste out of the brewer. I use filtered water which seems to cut down on scale. If you want to have no scale you can use distilled water.

Warranty
Last but not least the Cuisinart SS700 Single Serve Brewing System by Keurig has a 3yr warranty!!!

Thanks for reading my review if you have any questions feel free to contact me through the email address in my profile just make sure to put Epinions in the subject.
