Pros:Easy to use, can be worn for a few days, provides protection against germs.

Cons:Expensive as hell!!!

The Bottom Line: Expensive but worth it if you need something to lock in moisture and keep out germs.

I am an accident prone adult. No matter what I am doing, even something as seemingly safe as peeling vegetables, I am always getting cuts, nicks, scrapes or splinters. Splinters have to be the worst, it’s not just that you have something stuck in your skin that doesn’t belong there, it’s the fact that you have to dig that sucker out. I recently got a splinter in the palm of my hand when I was stripping an old table; it looked like it was ready to get stained and I was giving it the final once over – yes – this was one of the stupidest things I have ever done – by running my hands up and down the top and sides of it. Before I knew it I had a huge splinter of wood stuck in my hand. Now imagine you don’t have the use of your left hand for anything – even simple things like picking up the phone or opening a door – tell me how badly that would suck. My neighbor heard me whimpering and trying to open the back door to the house and offered some assistance. That’s when things went from bad to worse. He grabbed a pair of pliers from the toolbox and said “Here, let me get that for you”. Before I could stop him he had a firm grasp on the splinter and started tugging on it. This thing must have been made of some other worldly type of wood because it wasn’t budging. After five excruciating minutes of pain it was finally out, when I looked at it I couldn’t believe that thing was what was lodged in my hand.

I rinsed it out with some hydrogen peroxide then started looking for something to cover it with. There was still a little bit of bleeding and I knew that if this thing didn’t get the right kind of dressing it would get infected for sure. Now, with every type of gauze pad, band aid, dressing and first aid product on the market safety tucked away in my bathroom why exactly did I feel the need to go to the drugstore to get something just for this? Simple, I am a germaphobe who is paranoid. I wanted to get something that would be able to move with my hand – that is when I regained use of it – and would keep out bacteria and soak up any blood that may leak out of it. Turning to my trusty new pharmacist I asked him if there was something that would repel water, heal the wound, contain a first aid cream or ointment and protect it from germs. His reply, “If they made something like that, we’d be out of business”. He did suggest the Hydro Heal bandages from Curad saying that he had a lot of good luck with them when he used them.

Curad Hydro Heal Bandages

Have you ever left a band aid on for about twelve hours then went to peel it off? Ever look at how wrinkled your skin is from the moisture that was trapped under the band aid? Well, that’s generally a good thing as long as you don’t get some germ or weird bacteria inside it. With these there is a good bond to the skin thanks to a little extra room around the edges. To get the most from these you have to make sure that you are putting them on dry skin and that you press down all the edges so there is a good seal. That’s what helps to lock in the moisture and aid in healing your wound. It doesn’t hurt to add a little bit of a first aid cream to the area just make sure that you use it sparingly and that it isn’t anywhere near the edges of the band aid or it won’t stick to your skin.

Curad sort of pimps this out as the end all, be all of first aid treatments. I will say that it does help to keep things out of the wound and lock in moisture but you might gasp at the site of your skin when you go to remove this from it. It will look wrinkly, lighter than the rest of your skin [even if you haven’t been out in the sun or gotten a tan] and the skin will feel a bit more sensitive before it starts to dry out. For the splinter wound this was exactly what I needed; it worked exactly as they claimed it would and allowed me to have it on for several days without having to worry about changing it or the edges starting to peel away. My biggest concern was having the edges pull away from my skin because this was going to be used on the palm of my hand but I didn’t have any problems, I slapped it on and it stayed there until I went to remove it. After all, isn’t that the purpose of a band aid? Curad also tosses around the word “discrete” in describing this. It isn’t all that discrete and you know that it’s there – it’s not invisible so don’t think you are going to be getting something that is going to hide something from the view of others.

Price

I paid a little over four dollars for this package and when I went online to check prices, some places were charging more and a few were charging less. Since I wanted to make sure that this stayed as clean as possible and didn’t get infected I didn’t flinch at the price but if I were just casually shopping for things chances are I would have passed on this. You only get ten bandages per pack, each box contains three 1 1/8" x 2 3/8" and seven 7/8" x 1 5/8" sized band aids. I really wish they sold boxes that had more in them but if this one cost me four dollars and change who knows what a twenty or thirty pack might run.

The Bottom Line

These might be a little pricey but if you are worried about a wound getting infected and want something simple to use to cover it completely then this is the way to go. Short of using gauze and tape to seal things up, this is one of the few alternatives on the market outside of buying those huge bandages that make you look like a walking disaster. Like I said, if I were just strolling the aisles looking to stock up on items chances are I wouldn’t have picked these up and unless I need this exact type of product in the future chances are I won’t buy them until they are needed. Even though you only get ten in a pack and they are individually sealed and sterile until opened, I don’t want to take the chance of buying them and them sitting there for two years and drying out or getting ruined if they pipes leak. Then again, maybe if I buy these my luck will change and I won’t have as many accidents – isn’t that the way it always goes – don’t have something on hand and suddenly you need it but have it in the house and it goes to waste.

As always, thanks for the read!
