About ten years ago I saw an ad in the employment classifieds that promised to pay $9 an hour. During the early 90s this was an excellent hourly wage for someone without a college degree in New England. I scheduled an interview and found myself being offered a job as a marketing rep for Vector Marketing later that week. Woohooo! I was excited. Then I remembered to ask: What would I be selling?
It turns out that Vector Marketing was just a division of Cutco Cutlery, that sold, sure enought, Cutco Cutlery. But these are not just any knives. These are truly wonderful tools that anyone that spends more than 15 minutes a day in the kitchen needs.
The knives have a unique construction. The blade ran almost all the way through the handle, making it difficult, if not impossible to break. The knife blade on the carving knives, steak knives, trimmer, etc look like they are just serraded. However, on further inspection you can see that when you cut through something it is being cut with a blade above, back and in front. These knives can cut through almost anything.
The knives that have straight edges, such as a chopping knife work great as well. The handles on all the knives are designed to fit your hand better than other brands.
One of my favorite parts of the set was the spreader. It is flat like a spatula and then curved at the top, but with an edge on one side like that of the steak knives. If you buy nothing else from Cutco, buy the spreader! It is a sandwich makers dream! Slice the tomato, put mayo on the bread, chop up the onions and celery, mix the tuna...boom! No other tools necessary. And it is great for frosting cakes, and slice and serving cakes and pies.
Cutco has a great warranty also. You can get your knives sharpened free for life! However, they do not need to be sharpened very often. My knives have never had to be sharpened in ten years.
These knives are more expensive than some cutlery you will find in stores like Kitchen Etc. or Lecthers. However, you will NOT find knives that are better. Any of the sets that Cutco offers is a great gift for weddings, anniversaries, or even for the young adult that is moving into his or her very first apartment.
Whomever is lucky enough to get Cutco as a gift from you will be thinking of you ten years from now when they can still make awesome sandwiches with that spreader.
