| ooner's Full Review: Cutco Homemaker Knife Set |
The Cutco Homemaker Knife Set is perfect for the average family, if they are willing to spend a lot of money.
Most of the knives have the serrated-type "Double D" edge, which is nice in that it doesn't require any sharpening or maintenance and stays sharp for a very long time. However, most professional chefs HATE serrated edges as they simply don't cut smoothly enough. The Double D edge has a recessed straight edge design, and cuts very smoothly (for a serrated) right out of the box. Over time, as the edge wears down, it remains sharp but cuts more like an average serrated edge, tearing up food.
The biggest downside isn't the design of the blade, it's the manufacturing. Cutco's blades are stamped, rather than forged. While advanced tempering processes can create stamped blades that are just as hard as forged steel, they do not provide the same balance. Cutco knives are very durable, but at the same time lightweight. They are most definitely tough, but they don't feel that way in your hand.
The best feature of Cutco knives is the guarantee. All of Cutco's knives include a lifetime guarantee that covers any sort of damage, as well as free sharpening. I've had Cutco service reps come to my home to sharpen my knives, and they can also be sent back to the factory for professional resharpening.
In terms of price, there is both good news and bad. The bad news is that Cutco is most certainly not cheap. They are great knives, and cost accordingly. The good news, on the other hand, is that prices are flexible. Because Cutco is sold direct by sales representatives, they can offer lower prices in order to make sales. By haggling the price, a set of Cutco could be a couple hundred dollars lower than "retail" or include a large number of free "bonus" items.
