Pricey...but well worth it!!
Written: Jun 25, 2002 (Updated Jun 25, 2002)
Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Lasts forever, gorgeous, unique, a better investment than most other products
Cons:Pricey, but quality always is.
The Bottom Line: A set for people that cook all the time and need all the tools to do any job. Otherwise, get what you can afford and build toward a Homemaker set.
CUTCO has a good history of satisfaction. There are many people that complain about the price (which will always happen, have you looked at the prices of houses in California lately?), but they almost rarely complain about the quality. CUTCO has a motto: "We would rather explain price once than apologize for quality many times."
First, just like clothing, you need to see the product and how it compares to make a final decision. Don't buy anything else until you've seen the demo; that is an aspect of any good shopper. However, here are some of the CUTCO knife features just to give you an idea.
(1) They have the best materials...anything of quality does. They have the strongest steal that is throughout the blade and the handle, but it's not too strong that it cannot be sharpened. To compare, titanium is an awesomely strong metal; but it is so strong, that once it goes dull (which does still take years), nothing can sharpen it but a laser (now, how many people do you know have a laser to sharpen knives?); thus you will eventually have to throw them away and buy new ones. They also have Thermo-resin for the handles, which resist melting, chipping, cracking, staining, fading, odors, and bacteria. They have Nickel-silver rivets that don’t expand or contract with temperatures (higher tolerance for temperatures), thus you don't get the black mold or green mold around the rivets after time and time of washing. The materials used also allow all the CUTCO knives to go into the dishwasher - hence the term, dishwasher safe. Now, I rated the durability at a 4.0; not because I don't think it's durable, it really is, but I don't consider it at "indestructable" like the 5.0 rating dictates - nothing is, but CUTCO is pretty close!
(2) The handle is designed to fit right or left handed people, small and big handed people. It's backed by the National Arthritis Foundation for the ease of use and the comfort of the handle. This design is patented and unique to CUTCO. It feels great!
(3) The best part of the quality of the knives is the double-D edge (stands for double Durable). In laymen's terms, it is a recessed cutting edge. Still confused? Well, again, this is why you have to see it, or at least see a picture. But I'll try and describe it...first, it is not a serrated blade, although it looks like it far away. If you can imagine two points (like a serrated blade, but), in between the two points are three individual straight edges that cut forward, straight down, and backward(the forward and backward kind of looks like this \/ \/ \/ \/ , with a line connecting them on top). The straight edges allow the knife to cut like a straight edge knife, but the points allow the cutting edges to not touch hard surfaces (thus called recessed), and they are completely sharpenable. Because of this design, you don't need to sharpen your knives for 8-12 years. Hard surfaces cause knives to go dull, not the food, so if the cutting edges are recessed, then they don't dull as fast as a straight edge knife would because the whole straight edge touches the cutting surfaces (thus the reason why professional chefs love straight edges to cut things faster and better with, but they also take care of their knives and sharpen them frequently). This takes the time out of sharpening, but affords us the convenience of sharpness for a long, long time.
(4) But the best part is not in the price, material, design, or craftsmanship, but it is in the guarantee. Just like Craftsman tools, CUTCO has a forever guarantee. Any mechanic you talk too will have Craftsman tools, and the main reason (although it is expensive) is because of the quality and the ease of when it breaks - no questions asked - you trade it in for a brand new one. Forever is just that: your lifetime, your children's lifetime, your grandchildren's lifetime, and so on. In court, lifetime guarantees only last seven years, because it covers the lifetime of the product and not your lifetime, and most product lifetimes are seven years. Ask any business law student, professor, or professional, and they will tell you the same thing. This forever guarantee itself is well worth the price.
That, in a big, big nutshell, is CUTCO. But also, think of this: What is in a knife? Not much!! It cuts, right? Which knife set is the best? The quality of a single knife is much easier to comprehend then, lets say, a car. Is a Mercedes the best? Or how about a BMW? I know...long live the Chevrolets!!! Things like these are bought and they seldom last forever, especially these days. Now, for the most part, people are right...all a knife does is cut. But how well do they cut? How good does it feel and how easy is it to use? Why do we buy things that are uncomfortable or require us to push harder so that they can do the simple process of cutting? How often do we subject our bodies to undue stress for inexpensive products? Recently, I've noticed a lot more people telling me that they have arthritis in their fingers and wrists (just two examples of many other areas, just because it pertains to this particular topic). I know, I know, it's not because of their knives, but everything we do, if we don't minimize the undue stress, it can cost us more than we can ever put a value on.
I apologize if this whole review sounds like a pitch, but I don’t know how to let people see it my way (thus the many examples I have written) and at the same time say good things about CUTCO without making it sound like a sale. Although I use to be a CUTCO representative in college as an undergraduate (that's why I know so much – now I’m in Graduate School), through the use and testimonials of many clients, there is no doubt that these are the best. Just to show you how other people think of them, go to “eBay” and type CUTCO, and then type another maker like Henckels, Wustoff, or Chicago Cutlery. You will see a lot more bids for one set of CUTCO than you will for any other maker’s set. The benefit of buying from a representative is you get free stuff in the process and it’s completely brand new. People that have them but never sold them are good testimonials, but please don't think any less because I sold them. I am no longer with the company and there are no more benefits for me. But from someone who has used them and talked to more people than anybody else just owning them, I have experience. Just like a Doctor has experiences, and we value them, but he/she is still thinking about making the hospital money (or keeping cost down so they don't lose any, thus the point of HMOs). Everyone sells something, whether it is a product, or yourself. You sell yourself to impress your boss, your girlfriend, your spouse, your friends, etc, etc. Everyone sells, just not always a product or for money, but for something. Now, just for reference, in the amount paid at the very bottom, if I told you the price, you will freak. Usually when something is too expensive, they don't even look at it. When's the last time you have test driven an expensive car or SUV? If you have the money to buy those though, you will have the money to buy CUTCO. Value and price is different, give it a chance and do the smart thing: shop all the products, get the most feedback, and then make the smart decision. Obviously, to look on this website, you are already doing that...CUDOS TO YOU!!
