Thank God Ephedra Has Been Banned (Reply to this comment)
by af40
I tried this product back in 2001 when it was all the rage at GNC stores and when you couldn't go to a health store without being bombarded by images and advertisements for it. I was actually sold onto the product (naively I know now) by a salesperson who claimed, literally, that this product had no negative side-effects. I bought a $40 bottle (I think prices since then have tumbled) and started taking the one-a-day pill as according to the bottle directions.
Just to give you a sense of the types of false or misleading advertisements for this so-called 'safe' product:
-Great looking models (tanned, sculpted) showing off their bodies in apparent 'after' pictures. The 'before' pictures featured a slightly more heavier, less tanned, and less happy model. (Has anyone asked if these models were actually buff to begin with and then were asked to gain weight so that they could say they lost it with Xenadrine?)
-Sylvester Stallone and many other movie and tv personalities claiming how the product "changed their life".
-Scanty, questionable 'studies' purporting how safe the product is. Funny thing is, no studies showing potential dangers to the product have been shown.
Ephedra containing products stimulate the body in a similar way that hormones in the body stimulate the 'fight or flight' reaction, by raising blood pressure and adrenaline, and in the process causing your metabolism (the so-called thermogenic effect) to go up. You can pretty much feel your heart beating faster even at a normal rate.
I was actually in pretty good aerobic shape- just wanted to lose 10 pounds. On the basketball court I literally became so winded and tired that I had to stop playing after 10 minutes, and my face had turned red. The appetite suppressing effect caused me to not eat food for almost two days. I lost weight, though most of it was water loss from breakdown of glycogen as opposed to fat (also explains why I was thirsty).
This is a really dangerous product for anyone, not just people at risk for heart attacks. And what's just as dangerous is that even though ephedra/Ma Huang have been banned, other weight loss stimulants are still around, masquerading as 'safe'.
