| minusflo's Full Review: DANE-ELEC DA-M4-04-ML2 Meizu 4G Mini Player (Black... |
Since losing my Iriver T30, I was in search for a new flash mp3 player that has more than 1 GB capacity and can also play videos. I heard about Meizu from another website and for the price and capacity, I though it would be a good buy. I am happy to report that yes, it was. I got the 4 GB white one at Walgreens for $110 delivered.
THE GOOD:
I will go through a quick rundown of the more important features:
- supports MP3 at various bit rates, OGG and lossless FLAC.
- has 2.4-inch LCD color screen.
- can play movies through conversion using included software.
- has plenty of sound effects to suit your taste.
- battery is lithium-ion @ 700 mAh, rechargeable thru USB.
- has fm tuner, clock, calendar, calculator functions and some games included.
Sound Quality: The strongest point of this player aside from the numerous features loaded is the impressive and superior sound quality. The primary MP3/video decoder chip is a Samsung ARM processor and is coupled with a separate audio chip which is a Philips UA380HN. With the newer flash mp3 players, the combination of a "video and separate audio chips" seem to be becoming a trend. Meizu did a good job of executing the design with the sound being balanced and crisp. In fact, this MP3 player has a lot of bass and with at least 8 sound presets and a 10-band settable equalizer, one can easily fine tune and suit the sound characteristics to whatever type of music you are listening. The inclusion of Spatializer 3D sound effect is a plus but be careful because it may sound muddy using headphones. Another improvement is the included earphones which are vastly superior than Sony earbuds or even the ones from Apple Ipod or Creative MP3 players. The sound signature of the earphones closely match that of Sennheiser MX-500 for those familiar with it and perfectly matches the sound effects of the MP3 player. I have played music from various artists and genres such as Dido, Pet Shop Boys, U2, Annie Lenox, Mozart Classics, Usher and the sound ranged from warm and bassy to smooth, clear and silky.
Video Quality: The screen has a sharp contrast and bright colors. The player had no problem playing videos converted to AVI using the included Video Converter software. However, one can only convert at 18 frames per second and any higher rates will have problems playing such as jitters and momentary freezing. The video quality nevertheless is average and satisfactory for occasions like waiting in airports. In some movies I converted, I noticed some problems with the audio not being synchronized with the video...some millisecond delays. A nice feature is the resume function in the video so you can start again from where you left off.
The battery life is very good as I got 17 hours on audio with the equalizer set and about 4.5 hours on video.
THE BAD:
The player though very good still has some areas for improvement. The touch sensitive pad is too sensitive for me. I would have preferred a separate volume increase/decrease buttons. Also it would be nice if the player does not automatically update the playlist every time you switch it on after recharging or connecting to your PC. With 4 GB of contents, this updating takes a minute or two causing much delay.
Overall, the good features definitely outweigh the bad. This MP3 player is highly recommended.
