Pros:Great character likeness and paint job
Cons:Limited articulation; online exclusive figure
The Bottom Line: He's green and smart. No, it's not the Hulk as Brainiac 5 proves why the Legion of Super-Heroes need him in the line-up.
One of Superman's deadliest foes is the evil computer android Brainiac. Throughout the years, Brainiac has proved to be a constant thorn in the Man of Steel's side. So it comes as a big surprise that the descendent of Brainiac joins the legendary Legion of Super-Heroes team in the 30th Century. Brainiac 5 completes the quartet in the Legion of Super-Heroes four-pack offered exclusively on through MattyCollector.com as part of the Justice League Unlimited toy series.
Querl Dox turned away from Brainiac's evil legacy and became a force for good with the Legion. He possesses a "twelfth-level intellect" granting him superhuman calculation skills, amazing memory and exceptional technical knowledge. His superior intelligent mind has helped the Legion on many occasions through the devices he has invented. One of the most important inventions is the Legion Flight Ring given to all members. Another invention that he uses for himself his the force field belt that has remained a main method of defense for him.
He is usually portrayed with a green skin tone in the comic books but it's more bluish-green in the animated and toy line. His purple bodysuit and blond hair is a trademark of the character and I am glad that this is retained in the action figure as he resembles more of the classic Silver Age look. I do love the addition of the three circles on his forehead symbolizing that he is Brainiac, a motif that was developed for his ancestor in Superman: The Animated Series. If you couldn't tell by his skin colour that this is Brainiac, then these symbols will cement the deal. His force field belt is painted with a metallic silver that really pops off his purple bodysuit. Even his flight ring is presented though it is paint on his hand instead of sculpted.
Articulation is limited to only five points, something that is common with most of the figures in the Justice League Unlimited line. A peg hole on his right foot allows him to be inserted on a display stand to help make stay in an upright position.
Since the Legion of Super-Heroes four-pack is an exclusive set, Brainiac 5 can only be purchased through MattyCollector.com in a bundle with Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl for $30.00; he is not sold individually (at least not on the official site, though I'm sure places like eBay will offer him separately). But he does come individually packaged as opposed to be featured in a big set.
Brainiac 5 was chosen as the "fan favourite" fourth member to be featured in the Legion of Super-Heroes set. While the three founding members were a no-brainer, the fourth member was really up for grabs but Brainiac 5 is one of the first members that come to mind when thinking about the Legion (Wildfire, Mon-El, Shadow Lass, and Bouncing Boy are the others that readily pop into my head as well). He may lack in the social skills department but I would still want to have Brainiac 5 in my corner.
