KP Duty gave me the freedom to bare all!
Written: Oct 13 '06
Pros:Gave me smooth and clear skin, non-greasy, easy to apply, softens skin from day 1
Cons:expensive, small tubes, not a cure (cannot stop using it)
The Bottom Line: KP is not curable, but KP Duty is definitely worth a try on your quest for smoother, clearer skin!
Thanks to DERMAdoctors KP Duty Im proudly showing off my birthday suit to anyone wholl take notice!
GOTCHA! Im not that bold. But KP Duty did give me the freedom to wear cute springy dresses and sleeveless shirts, something I hadnt done for over a year because of the rough and unattractive bumps on my arms.
Finding KP Duty
I have noticed Keratosis Pilaris (KP) on my skin on and off for years, but only just discovered what it was in the past year when it became much worse during and immediately following my pregnancy. I had it on the backs of my upper arms, and I became so self-conscious about it that I refused to wear anything sleeveless for months! This severely limited my wardrobe for those cute spring dresses! I tried many solutions, including regular body lotion, Glytone, Pearsons Promise, and BioSkinCare. Finally, I stumbled across Dermadoctors KP Duty after doing a google search on the subject. I, for one, am not looking back!
How do you know if you have KP?
In my research, Ive read that approximately 50% of the human population suffers from some form of KP, but dont realize what it is or that it is treatable! Up until the last year, when mine got so bad that it was embarrassing, I was one of those people! Im not going to go into great depth on what KP is and why it happens, because that could fill a book. If you want information past the little I give here, please visit shantel575s KP Advice Piece.
Any or all of the following symptoms, which occur mostly on the upper arms, thighs, and sometimes the back and face, might mean that you are a fellow KP sufferer: numerous small rough bumps that resemble goosebumps to the touch, redness around the bumps, or small red dots either raised or unraised. The symptoms may come and go, getting better with seasonal changes and getting worse with hormone changes (thus the reason for mine manifesting during my pregnancy!).
What is KP Duty and how is it used?
KP Duty is a dermatologist formulated therapeutic cream created especially to treat KP. It promises to smooth out your skin by reducing inflammation and redness and eliminating crustiness, flaking and dry skin. KP Duty is white and comes in a 4oz squeezable tube. The directions indicate that results should be obtained by applying it twice daily at first until your skin texture improves. Then, for maintenance, you should apply it 5-7 times per week. Results should be seen in 4-6 weeks in both mild and severe cases.
KP Duty does not promise a cure for KP, but does promise that if it is used consistently, the symptoms can be managed. It is safe for those ages 2 and up and is safe to use on all parts of the body (skin only). However, because it contains Glycolic Acid, you should always wear a sunscreen when using it (you should anyway, but this is an extra precaution).
You can purchase KP Duty from dermadoctor.com for $36 for 1 tube or $67 for a pack of 2 tubes.
KP Duty Ingredients
Aqua (Water), Glycolic Acid, Sodium Glycolate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Camellia Oleifera (Japanese Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Urea, Sorbitol, Hexyl Laurate, C12-20 Acid PEG-8 Ester, Sorbitan Stearate, Cetyl Ricinoleate, Dimethicone, Biosacharide Gum-1, Sodium Hyaluronate, Algae Extract, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Xantham Gum, Methylparaben, Propylparaben
My trial period with KP Duty
Back in June, I purchased one 4oz tube of KP Duty from Dermadoctor.com for $36 to give it a try. In order to get the most out of its hydrating ingredients, I applied it to the affected areas (my shoulders and upper arms) immediately after showering in the morning. I then applied it again just before bed.
After showering, I patted dry my arms and then squeezed a generous amount from the tube. The cream is much thicker than regular lotion, so more of it is required to cover an area. I used an amount approximately the size of 2 quarters on each arm! When I first squeezed the cream into my hand, I noticed a light fresh fragrance, but once it was on my skin I couldnt smell anything, so for all practical purposes, I consider it odorless. It spreads easily and evenly and it dries quickly. The best part is that its free of grease, and right after it is applied, my arms felt very soft.
I was initially frustrated when my skin looked exactly the same at the 3 week mark. But I kept on using it, and to my surprise, at the 6 week mark, there was a dramatic difference! My skin was so much smoother and about 90% of the red marks were gone! I ran outside in a tank top belting verses from The Sound of Music. Not really, but I felt like doing that after months of concealing my arms and shoulders.
4 months later
Ive now been using KP Duty almost every day since June. After the improvement I saw at 6 weeks, I began to use it only for maintenance. Now I only apply once per day in the mornings right after my shower, and I usually use it at least 5 days each week. Ive gone through 3.5 tubes in all so far, which is by far not the cheapest product Ive used. The KP is still about 90-95% gone. If I search very hard, I can find a few little bumps here and there, but nothing like what I was covered with prior to using KP Duty. For maintenance purposes, I would estimate that 1 tube will last me about 2 to 3 months.
I did, in an attempt to save some money by conserving the cream, try to move the applications back to every third day. I immediately noticed more of the signature KP bumps returning to my skin, so I went back to every other day. Thats the problem with KP; it cannot be cured.
You might see on the Dermadoctor website that they recommend using KP Duty with their KP Duty Body Scrub for maximum results. I wanted to avoid buying another expensive product and instead use just an Aveeno body scrub in the shower and that seems to work just fine. However, using the 2 together might be necessary for more severe cases.
Final Thoughts
I would recommend KP Duty to anyone I know suffering from KP. I definitely think its worth a try. But from speaking to others, I would also recommend purchasing only 1 tube, because I have no idea if it will be effective on all skin types or more severe cases than mine. In addition, its very expensive for those that have symptoms on a larger area of their body, because I go through it pretty fast for just my arms. I cant imagine if it was on my legs or back!
Overall, though, Im pleased with what its done for me. My KP bumps and redness is only noticeable to someone inspecting my arms close-up, and I havent met someone that bold. KP not a serious health condition, but it sure can be ugly and embarrassing, and now that Ive found something that works, I hope to share this knowledge with others hiding behind their long sleeves!
A great BIG thanks to shantel575 for getting this brand and product added to the database for me!
